| Cause: | Fall of Stone |
| Lives Lost: | 1 |
An inquest was held at Filand Bridge, Bishop Auckland on 27 May into the death of hewer Gibson Teasdale. While working alone in one of the boards at Coppy Crooks Colliery on 27 October 1849, he was crushed when some metal stone fell from the roof. The stone was so large, it had to be halved to get him out. Surgeon Mr. Jobson said Teasdale had sustained a fracture of the dorsal spine; he died on 26 May. It was suggested at the inquest that he had been working too far in front of the props while hewing at the coal face.
