Thomas Elles and Christopher Liddle were taking away a pillar in the broken of St. Hilda's Colliery on 15 January. Elles was striking at the splint coal under the roof, when it fell upon his head, and knocked him down with his head between his legs. The seam was about five feet eight inches thick. Liddle was at the time working about 4 yards off, but received no injury. The coal was soon removed off him. The deputy had inspected the place a short time before the fall, and all appeared safe. Surgeon Mr. Hutchinson found the lower part of Elles's spine broken, the left thigh also broken, and one or two ribs fractured. He was given a little wine and water, had his leg bandaged, but died half an hour later.
