On Saturday, 29 January, John Guy and his two sons, and another man had gone to their work on the screens at Roddymoor Colliery at 3a.m. Because of the frost, "the slides of the apparatus for separating the small and large coal, for lifting the coal after passing the screen to a higher level, would not act." Guy went down the apparatus hole to clean the slides, but did not tell the brakesman to stop the engine. The engineman then heard the men shout "hold", and stopped it immediately. John Allen went in and found Guy jammed between the wall and the cage; he was dreadfully bruised and both his arms were broken. He was taken unconcious from the screens, but only lived about another two hours.
