An explosion of gas at the Minor Pit, Hetton Colliery on 2 March killed two men George Watson, 40, deputy overman, and Anthony Burdis, 39, pitman. Watson had been examining one of the boards with a naked candle when the blast occurred. Because the after damp had been so strong, the rescuers had to delay entry into the workings, and it was 13 hours before the bodies were recovered.
