He was at work in the Maria Pit, Castle Eden Colliery repairing a door. Two or three pieces of stone had fallen down out of a gullet or slip in the crossing, and "a quantity of gas was given off and fired at a candle belonging to a man named Barrass, by which explosion deceased, Barrass, and two others were very much burnt." Ellwood died of his injuries on 20 March. At the inquest it was stated that "the current of air was extremely good at the time and so strong that the men were obliged to shield their candles to prevent them being blown out"
