Description

An inquest was held at Hetton-le-Hole on Monday, 29 January into the death of miner Ralph Beesom, aged 52. Matthew Lee, deputy-overman, said on Saturday last he was inspecting the working in the George Pit, and when he came to the place where the deceased worked he found him on the ground with his head betwixt his knees, and a large stone, which had fallen from the roof, upon the top of him. Lee quickly got assistance and the stone was removed, but Beesom was quite dead.
