At Fenwick colliery, near Belford, there was a sudden inrush of water, (occasioned by an accidental breech in a wall which separated the new from the old working) which alarmed the men ; and three of the five that were in the pit, ran to the rope, and made their escape. The exit of two brothers, named Thomas Alexandee and Andrew Alexander, aged 24 and 14, was cut off by the water, and they perished. Verdict "Accidental Death".
