Local Records

1735

An attempt to procure coals was made this year, near the village of Hart ; the depth of the boring through a bed of hard limestone was 55 fathoms, after which a succession of open limestone, with soft, marly partings, and water, put a stop to all further proceedings. [In 1808 a second trial was made, about 200 yards from the former, with similar want of success.] [LRSN]
