Local Records1710About this year Bensham colliery exploded, by which lamentable catastrophe, between seventy and eighty human beings lost their lives. At this colliery the first attempt was made to work the low main seam of coal in the neighbourhood of Newcastle. [LHTB] June 10. — A petition was ordered to be forwarded to Queen Anne, concerning a riot of the keelmen in the port of Tyne. They had put an entire stop to the coal trade. [LRS]
