Job Breakdown Sheets

Breakdown No. 9

Examining the Working Place

(A) At the Coalface

1: Examine the roof.
2: Examine the coalface.
3: Examine the supports.
4: Test for gas.
5: Examine the machinery.

1: Examine the roof.

  (a)
With fingers of one hand touching the roof, tap the roof with a pick. A firm ring of the pick denotes a good roof. If any vibration is felt by the fingers or the pick gives a dull sound the roof is broken or unsafe and should be given extra support.
  (b)
Take down any loose stones, pack any cavity and set temporary supports if required.

2: Examine the coalface.

  (a)
Test the coalface by sounding it with a pick. A dull sound denotes loose coal. Set sprags or pull down loose or unsafe coal.

3: Examine the supports.

  (a)
See that the supports are set in accordance with the Colliery Support Rules.
  (b)
Reset or replace any supports which may be loose or may be damaged. The props should be set at right angles to the roof and floor except in seams which are steeply inclined and then they may be "underset" (see Training Manual No. 2). Examine lids and footpieces.

4: Test for gas.

Test for gas within limits of the working place if provided with a flame safety lamp. Withdraw and report immediately to a deputy or official in charge if the presence of any gas is found.

5: Examine machinery, conveyors, etc.

Ensure that the machinery is in working order:
coal cutting machine  —
see that there are no loose or missing cover plates and that the cables are not damaged.
conveyors  —
see that the conveyor is properly aligned.
  —
see that the belt rides on the rollers.
  —
replace damaged or missing bolts.
  —
see that the rollers ride correctly in the stools.
  —
see that there are no obstructions to interfere with the free running of conveyor. If belt conveyor, look under belt especially.
