Company Notes

Report on 4th April 1938: Colliery Merger: Two important mining concerns in Northumberland are amalgamating — the Seaton Burn Coal Company, with pits at Seaton Burn and Dinnington, a few miles north of Newcastle, and Hartley Main Collieries. Mr. C. A. Nelson, chairman and managing director of the Hartley company, said that minor details had to be settled. It was no doubt one of the amalgamations that would have been pressed by the Government under the new Coal Mines Amalgamation Bill when it becomes an Act. It was desirable from an economic viewpoint. It was intended to sink a new pit at Brenkley, about a mile and a half north of Seaton Burn. The Beaumont seam at Dinnington was to be closed, but when the new shaft was sunk — and it was intended to get on with it straight away — the travelling distance to this seam would be cut out. Some miners would be temporarily displaced by the closing of the Beaumont seam, but when work was started on the new pit it was hoped to absorb them and many others. It was intended to bring the Seaton Burn and Dinnington pits up to date by electrification
