Names of those killed at this colliery

Please note that this collection of names is by no means complete!

Bewsher, Isaac, 03 Nov 1885, aged 39, Miner, "midlegging" a head tree over which was boarding and Norway timber packing, with loose rubbish above, the head tree broke and let the loose stuff upon deceased

Birbeck, Mason, 01 Dec 1890, 6:30 a.m., 1st hour of shift, aged 49, Miner, struck by stone from shot; the deceased had lighted the fuses of two shots and retired to a place of safety; the reports of two shots were heard (one of which was in another working), and on deceased returning to his working, the second shot exploded, and a portion of ore from the shot struck him and killed him

Casson, John, 18 Sep 1882, aged 25, Miner, struck by balance weight falling down shaft

Collins, James, 21 Jun 1883, aged 20, Miner, killed by a fall of roof

Coulthard, Thomas, 24 Jul 1890, 1:30 p.m., 8th hour of shift, aged 24, Trailer, fell down shaft; while lifting a bogie of metal on the rails of the cage at an eye in the shaft, the cage commenced to ascend, and deceased fell under it and down the shaft

Errington, Henry, 21 Aug 1892, (accident: 16 Aug 1892, 9:00 a.m., 3rd hour of shift), aged 67, Miner, He had fired three shots, and was engaged in getting down the ore, when a large piece fell from the face causing injuries from which he died on the 21st of the month [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Hyland, John, 15 Nov 1880, aged 45, Miner, killed by a fall of ore

Irving, John, 04 Feb 1899, aged 19, Labourer, The last of a set of five empty bogies had left the rails near the top of a self-acting inclined plane. In replacing this bogie it was accidentally detached from the set, and running amain down the incline, it struck deceased. A manhole was close to him, but instead of entering it, he, in the excitement of the moment, ran straight on. An improved coupling has since been introduced [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Murien, James, 30 Dec 1913, aged 24, Miner, deceased was boring a hole in a stope of ore, about 5 feet above the sole of the working, when a mass of stone, weighing about 5 or 6 cwts., fell from the roof, 18 feet above, and struck him; the place had been examined officially twice during the morning; once before the workmen entered and once after

Stewart, Samuel, 18 Nov 1892, 10:00 a.m., 4th hour of shift, aged 35, Miner, He had fired a shot, and was in the act of clearing the ore away, when a piece of ore from the top of the face, and in which there was a partly drilled hole, fell upon him [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Teesdale, Isaac, 24 Apr 1889, aged 45, Miner, fall of ore fro the roof; an official inspection had not been made of this place for 48 hours previous to the accident

Tidyman, William, 07 Mar 1895, 4:00 p.m., 2nd hour of shift, aged 50, Miner, deceased was preparing to put in a "leg," when he was caught by a fall of ore from the side of the working; very little timber was displaced by the fall, but life was extinct when his body was recovered; the place had not been officially examined that shift, but two such inspections had been made earlier in the day

Todd, John, 29 Jun 1900, aged 48, Miner, A shot had been fired in deceased's working place, to which he was returning, when the roof of the travelling road suddenly gave way and caught him. The roof at this point consisted of hard ore, and was not timbered with head-trees, as it was considered sufficiently strong. [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Todhunter, Isaac, 24 Apr 1891, 6:00 p.m., 4th hour of shift, aged 60, Lead Miner, deceased had fired a shot and was dressing the ground down, when a piece of rock fell from a "slip" on to him, causing injuries which proved fatal [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Williams, George, 03 Nov 1885, aged 36, Miner, "midlegging" a head tree over which was boarding and Norway timber packing, with loose rubbish above, the head tree broke and let the loose stuff upon deceased

Wilson, George, 18 Jan 1887, aged 18, Labourer, deceased was working in the middle-eye of this pit filling metal into bogeys, and putting them on the cage; it is supposed that the deceased ran the bogey off the plates on the cage, then signalled away; after rapping the cage away he probably attempted to lift the bogey on the plates, when the cage was drawn up the shaft and taking deceased with it, on the roof of the eye he would be knocked off and dropped down the pit
