Ryan, John, 30 Oct 1944, (accident: 20 Jan 1944), aged 35, Hewer, he was hewing in the headways when deputy George Simpson walked by and heard a small fall of stone, he found Ryan in a sitting position with his head pinned down by a stone about 4 feet long and 15 inches thick, he was released and taken out on a stretcher; he died at Durham County Hospital, due to exhaustion and toxaemia caused by a severed spinal cord
