Bell, Joseph, 23 Jan 1907, aged 33, Hewer, fall of side [More information ...]

      

Bryan, Frank, 22 Oct 1891, 9:00 a.m., 2nd hour of shift, aged 43, Hewer, on taking down some top coal a piece of stone fell out of a "slip" from the roof on to deceased [Inspection made & Inquest attended]

      

Fenwick, Richard, 31 Dec 1894, died from cancer of the liver; he had been off work for some weeks through illness, but started again on the 22nd October; after a few hours he complained of feeling unwell, and left the pit, subsequently complaining that he had injured himself on the road out by falling over a rail, but his mate who was with him saw nothing of the accident

      

Ferguson, John, 16 Dec 1905, aged 55, Shiftman, Deceased, who had been out of employment, and while working his first shift at the Colliery along with a chargeman, had brought out a tub of stone to run down an incline, he asked the lad at the brake if he was ready, and shortly after the chargeman came out and found deceased lying behind the tub quite dead. The doctor certified that death was due to natural causes, and no inquest was held

Laird, George, 29 Jan 1901, aged 17, Waggon-driver, He was sitting on the front end of a full waggon, driving the horse attached to it. The horse turned off at the usual place, and deceased failing to unhook the trace chain was thrown in front of the waggon wheels [Inspection made & inquest attended]

      

Lowes, [Mrs.], 15 Jun 1901, [Not employed], she was gathering coals from the burning debris heap when she slipped amongst the burning refuse, and then rolled into the sea; she was not employed at the colliery, and had no right on the heap

      

Mallins, Edward, 12 Jul 1893, 1:00 p.m., 5th hour of shift, aged 57, Hewer, Deceased was assisting a putter to lift his full tub on to the rails, when he slipped and fell, and afterwards left the pit. complaining of a pain in the chest. He died a few days afterwards from a ruptured lung [Inspection made & inquest attended]

      

Martin, William, 02 Dec 1898, aged 68, Bratticer, Martin and the overman were walking up the endless rope plane, when some empty tubs ran amain owing to the breakage of a clip. Instead of taking refuge in a manhole, Martin stepped behind a full set, which was caught by the empty tubs, and he was jammed against a prop [Inspection made & inquest attended]

      

McNally, Patrick, 30 Sep 1892, 11:30 a.m., 3rd hour of shift, aged 40, Hewer, He was knocking out some props from underneath some top coal, and as he struck the last one the coal fell upon him. Although warned, he persisted in using a hammer instead of a punch prop [Inspection made & inquest attended]

      

Parker, Henry, 02 Jan 1909, aged 65, Deputy, fall of roof on road he was repairing

      

Parkin, John, 12 Aug 1901, aged 54, Hewer, found dead in his working place; his death was due to heart disease, for which he had been medically treated for several years

      

Patterson, John, 24 Mar 1909, aged 54, Hewer, coal from pick struck knuckle and blood poisoning supervened

      

Ross, David Tinnion, 26 Oct 1903, aged 67, Banksman, shaft accident [More information ...]

      

Sheehan, Albert, 23 Jan 1907, aged 65, Hewer, fall of side [More information ...]

      

Southwell, William, 25 Nov 1902, aged 54, Hewer, the deceased and another hewer were employed in the Ten Quarters Band in a "broken" working yards wide, having a coal roof 2 feet thick ; while deceased was in the act of squaring back the bottom coal in order to set a prop, some top coal and stone suddenly fell away from a slip and caught him in a stooping position ; the deputy had just left the place after examining it for the second time, and had instructed the deceased to set the prop as an extra precaution

Wilkin, Robert, 19 Nov 1894, 5:00 a.m., 5th hour of shift, aged 33, Hewer, This was a case where, when engaged at stone-work, the deceased was caught by a fall of stone, although he and his mate considered the place safe [Inspection made & inquest attended]
