Names of those killed at this colliery

Please note that this collection of names is by no means complete!

Allison, C. H., , [date unknown]

Banks, William, 10 Nov 1899, aged 38, Oiler, The endless haulage rope broke, and it is supposed that deceased, who was caught by the tubs, was either on the clutch-bogie or was walking beside the set [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Barwick, Alex, , [date unknown]

Bell, Robert, 20 Nov 1889, aged 50, Hewer, killed by a fall of roof

Blair, Thomas, , [date unknown]

Blaylock, John, 28 Nov 1913, (accident: 13 Nov 1913), aged 16, Brusher Boy, whilst deceased was preparing to take out limewash from a settling pond with a scoop, he fell in and was severely scalded; he died 15 days later

Burns, Samuel, , [date unknown]

Clare, Thomas William, 08 Dec 1906, aged 37, Set Rider [More information ...]

Conners, Joseph, 24 May 1895, 11:30 a.m., 5th hour of shift, aged 18, Apprentice, in attempting to put a belt onto a revolving fly wheel, deceased was drawn over the pulley and killed

Cooper, Samuel, 03 Mar 1906, (accident: 28 Feb 1906), aged 57, Hewer, killed by a fall of roof [More information ...]

Cowan, John, , [date unknown]

Darwood, James, 04 Nov 1897, aged 20, Trailer, The deceased and his marrow were working at the face of a wall 5 yards wide, along the low side of which was a 3½-feet dip hitch, and at right-angles to this a slip ran across the face. About 3 feet of top coal and "cash" fell away at this slip, breaking off at the first two props about 6 feet from the slip, and crushed the deceased. The place had a short time previously been examined by the under-manager and the deputy [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Donelly, John, 24 Jun 1913, aged 44, Shiftman, deceased was repairing a fall caused by runaway tubs on engine plane, when a clipper (youth) allowed four tubs to run away, which crushed deceased between the first and second sets of tubs

Edgar, T., , [date unknown]

Fitzsimmons, James, 21 Dec 1908, aged 22, Loco Fireman, while riding on step of waggons pushed by a locomotive is supposed to have fallen off and been run over

Hogg, Smithson, 03 Jun 1902, aged 35, Hewer, while hewing with his marrow in a broken working in the Main Band, a fall of roof suddenly occurred ; six inches of coal was left to keep up four feet of "cash" which was of a very friable nature ; the coal prevented the presence of a slip being detected ; the lift was holed and only a few tubs of coal remained to be filled ; the working was apparently well timbered, several props being within 3 feet of the face

Keenan, Leslie, Jan 1958, fall of stone [approximate date]

Maratty, Francis, 29 Jan 1901, (accident: 20 Dec 1900), died in the Whitehaven Infirmary from rheumatic fever; he was injured in the pit, but according to the evidence of three medical men, the injuries he received in no way contributed to his death

McGean, Patrick, 04 Mar 1900, Labourer, a person of weak intellect , who was occasionally employed as a labourer at Walkmill Colliery, was found dead, being suspended by a rope in one of the coke ovens

Miller, William, 18 Jun 1897, aged 23, Hewer, Whilst getting down some top coal, which had been left on after the first working. a quantity of coal and shale fell on him. The accident was of a comparatively simple character. He had evidently drawn more timber than was necessary with the above result. He was a careful and competent man and had been selected for this particular work [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Moore, George Gay, 26 Jul 1913, aged 32, Hewer, deceased was in front of tub whilst taking it down to his working place, when it ran away and crushed his head between tub and roof; he should not have been in front of the tub

Moses, Harold, , [date unknown]

Porthouse, Joseph Henry, 26 Aug 1912, aged 17, Clipper, deceased appears to have slipped when tightening a clip, and was caught by the set; the rope travelled at the rate of 1¼ miles per hour; he was dragged 14 feet and was fatally injured

Reay, John, 05 Feb 1900, aged 22, Roadman, The deceased was illegally riding on the front clutch bogie attached to a set of full tubs, when he fell off, and all the set of 24 tubs passed over him. [Inspection made & inquest attended]
