    Catalogue of plans of abandoned mines for Walker Colliery
Notes:

1842 - The High Main Seam being abandoned and tubbed off at Tyne Main Colliery in this year, an arrangement was entered into with the owners of Felling, Walker, Wallsend, Willington and Heaton Collieries, under which they contributed to the cost of keeping the large pumping engine at Friar's Goose at work to prevent the water from passing to the dip. The quantity of water raised by the engine at Friar's Goose Pit in 1849 amounted to 1,170 gallons per minute.

1919 - Bensham, Low Main, Beaumont, Brockwell seams abandoned

1920 - High Main seam abandoned

Allison, Adam, 29 Dec 1891, 5:15 p.m., 2nd hour of shift, aged 28, Shifter, after preparing a shot in some top stone and drawing the timber out ready for firing, the deceased carelessly went under the stone for some rails when the stone fell on him [Inquest attended]

     

Anthony, George, 12 Jun 1902, (accident: 24 May 1902), aged 22, Waggon Driver, the horse under deceased's charge was drawing a waggon into a coal shed when deceased tripped and fell, causing also another driver who was with him to fall, each man had his left leg broken by the waggon passing over it ; blood poisoning supervened in deceased's case ; he was taken to Newcastle Infirmary on 7th June, and his leg amputated, but he died five days after the operation, Buried: Walker Churchyard/Cemetery

Barnes, Joseph, 15 Feb 1894, 4:00 a.m., 7th hour of shift, aged 56, Wasteman, Barnes was engaged drawing props in a return airway when some stone fell and broke his leg, and he died some time after. The place appears to have been considered quite safe [Inquest attended]

Curry, Thomas, 15 Dec 1900, aged 15, Driver, The deceased drove a pony attached to one full tub into a landing, and on the rolleywayman following him he found the pony loosed off and deceased crushed between his own and some other full tubs. No one actually saw the accident. [Inquest attended]

Inglis, Henry, 26 Dec 1906, (accident: 22 Dec 1906), aged 13, [Not Employed], Deceased and other boys trespassed upon the short railway connecting the colliery with the staiths on the Tyne. He was on a narrow ledge on the line of rails used for the loaded wagons, between some loaded chaldron wagons and the empty road, and just as an empty wagon was moving by gravity back from the staiths, he fell off the ledge a distance of 3½ feet, and one of his arms extending over the empty road the wagon went over it. He was taken to Newcastle Infirmary, where he died.

McKie, John, 02 Jun 1893, 2:20 a.m., 8th hour of shift, aged 16, Assistant Onsetter, In lowering full tubs into a three-decked cage, he neglected to put the chock in for the last two, and whilst he and the onsetter were trying to stop the tubs, he (deceased) was in some way drawn into the shaft, and fell a distance of 42 fathoms [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Platts, Ralph, 25 Apr 1900, aged 38, Hewer, Deceased and his marrow had taken out the bottom coal and stone band, and stayed the top coal with a prop, but notwithstanding, the roof and top coal fell, canting out the prop. [Inspection made]

     

Pritchard, John Hodgkiss, 03 Aug 1892, 11:30 p.m., 4th hour of shift, aged 24, Shifter, Said to have sprained himself when pushing a kibble. He went on with his work, and was going about as usual at night. No report made at the colliery until his death [Inquiries made], Buried: St. Cuthberts Churchyard, East Rainton

Taylor, John W., 24 Feb 1901, (accident: 19 Dec 1900), aged 19, Shifter, The deceased was removing some pillaring in order to make ready a working. when some stone fell away at a slip. It was considered that the roof was good and did not require timbering. There was plenty of timber close at hand [Inquest attended]

      

Tonge, John William, 15 Oct 1910, aged 35, Shifter, killed by a fall of roof

      

Walker, John, 11 Jun 1891, 10:45 a.m., 5th hour of shift, aged 38, Acting Onsetter, fell down the shaft from one seam to another, and it is probable he had neglected to put a chain across the top as he ought to have done [Inspection made]

      

Watson, George, 22 Nov 1862, 7:00 a.m., Wasteman, killed in the 1862 explosion, of New Pit, was a widower and leaves a daughter [More information ...]

      

Widdrington, Anthony, 08 Dec 1897, aged 34, Hewer, There were several men in the cage ready to ride to bank, and after the signal had been given a noise was heard. As the cage was about to move, one man jumped out safely, and when the cage was fairly running, deceased tried to do the same, and fell some distance into the sump. There was no cause for alarm [Inspection made & inquest attended]

      

Wilkinson, Jonas, 1897, aged 5, [Not employed], while trespassing fell from some steps and fractured his skull [fatality reported during the year but not classified as a colliery accident]
