Carr, James, 18 May 1893, (accident: 14 Apr 1893, 2:00 p.m., 4th hour of shift), aged 23, Hewer, He was bending down kirving or picking some dirt from the coal, when a small piece of band fell on the back of his head, forcing his month on to his knee, which was cut, and knocking two teeth out. He died on the 18th May, from blood poisoning [Inquest attended]

Gardiner, Richard, 22 Aug 1895, aged 18, Pony Putter, died from typhoid fever; it was alleged that he had received an injury in the pit some time before, but the doctor stated that the death had not been accelerated by any such cause [fatality reported during the year but not classified as a colliery accident]

Hodgson, Victor, 16 Mar 1893, 7:40 a.m., 2nd hour of shift, aged 14, Incline Lad, This boy was working at the foot of an incline plane, coupling tubs, he was sitting in a safe place when the "sets" started, but on bearing the tubs running back he tried to get into another place opposite, and was caught. A coupling link broke at the welding, causing the full tubs to run against the empty ones, and breaking the rope. The accident was evidently due to defective welding, but it is doubtful whether it could have been detected on examination. [More information ...]

      

Horne, Alfred, 07 Jun 1914, aged 52, Pumpman, deceased was found lying dead between the rails on a curve on a main and tail rope rolleyway; he had charge of a pump worked by the tail rope; his legs had been cut off by the tail rope, which had crossed over owing to the collapse of a sheave; from the evidence it appeared that he was doing something to the sheave at the time

Kitching, Joshua, 04 Oct 1912, aged 28, Stoneman, whilst putting a pack on at the gate-end of a longwall face, a large stone fell from a roll in the roof, which had previously been noticed and timbered; the timber was insufficient to hold the stone

     

Lamb, John, 24 Apr 1881, aged 33, Buried: West Auckland Cemetery

      

Lamb, John, 24 Apr 1896, aged 33, Hewer, The deceased was working in a place about 6 feet wide when a large stone about 5 feet in diameter suddenly came away from close up to the face as he was "kirving." A plank with two props and another prop were under the stone and were knocked out by the fall [Inspection made & inquest attended]

      

Lowrison, Joseph, 28 Oct 1893, 10:00 a.m., 1st hour of shift, aged 47, Back Overman, This was a simple accident. The full tubs were standing on the crossing, and deceased was pulling them out of the way of the empty tubs, when his foot slipped, and he fell against the pony, which was startled, and dragged two of the empties over the deceased [Inquest attended]

      

Murray, Guy, 13 Dec 1895, 10:00 p.m., 5th hour of shift, aged 58, Shifter, the deceased and another man were taking up clay to make height for the tub, and, interfering with some props, caused the stone to fall

Smith, William, 24 Jul 1901, aged 16, Driver, The deceased was driving a set of tubs past the bottom of a self-acting incline when a runaway tub came down the incline, and caught him. The boy at the bankhead had been lowering the full set on to it, and evidently the chock had not been secured [Inquest attended]

Walker, William, 24 Jun 1892, 1:15 p.m., 4th hour of shift, aged 39, Hewer, He was working out the bottom coal when a piece of overhanging clay band, under which he had set a prop and plank, suddenly fell upon him. He should have taken the band down before commencing work [Inspection made & inquest attended]
