Carrick, William, 21 Oct 1903, aged 26, Hewer, Deceased sometimes worked as a putter, and sometimes as a hewer. On the day of the accident he acted in both capacities. Not having sufficient work as a putter the deputy allowed him to hew part of his shift, and directed him to work at the side of a pillar in the Yard seam. Deceased worked at the point for some time, and then went to the other side of road, and while hewing there a stone fell from the side upon him. The fore shift deputy had not visited deceased after he started to hew. The Local Inspectors reported "that it was a pure accident, and seemed to our judgment quite unforeseen."
