Description

The West Stanley Colliery is the property of Mr. John Henry Burn, and is situated about six miles west of Chester-le-street, in the county of Durham. There are four seams now being worked; the shield row at 39 fathoms from the surface, the low main at 93 fathoms, the Hutton at 97 fathoms, and the Busty at 140 fathoms. Besides these seams which are now in work, there are the Five Quarter, and the Brass Thrill Seams, which have been worked out. There are four shafts belonging to the colliery, two of which are used for working the Busty Seam. They are the "Busty" Shaft, and the "Lamp" Shaft, the former being the downcast, and the latter the upcast shaft. In addition to these two, there is a third shaft sunk to the Hutton Seam, and a fourth to the Shield Row Seam. The Busty Shaft is 12 ft. in diameter and 140 fathoms in depth, and is used for drawing coals from the Busty and Hutton seams. The Lamp shaft is 10 feet in diameter and 140 fathoms in depth and is used for drawing coal from the Low Main and Shield Row Seams. The coal obtained from the colliery is principally used in the manufacture of coke and gas.

Official Report into the 1882 Disaster

West Stanley colliery, belonging to John Henry Burn, Esq., has two shafts working the following seams : Shield Row, 6 feet thick at a depth of 39 fathoms. Five Quarter, 4 feet, 54 fathoms ; Low Main, 5 feet, 95 fathoms ; Hutton, 3 feet 6 inches, 100 fathoms, and the Busty, 6 feet 6 inches of coal and 3 feet 6 inches of band, at a depth of 140 fathoms. The weekly output averages 600 tons, about one third of which is converted into coke on the spot, and the number usually employed averages 500 men and boys. This colliery has been worked by the same family for over half a century.

Whellan's 1894 Directory of County Durham

The colliery was worked by means of two shafts – the downcast, known as the Busty Pit, 12 feet diameter, and the upcast, known as the Lamp Pit, 9¾ feet diameter. Both were sunk to the Brockwell Seam.

The coal from the Towneley Seam was lowered down a staple to the hanging-on of the downcast shaft at the Busty level, and that from the Tilley Seam was run down a stone drift to the same level at the opposite side of the shaft. Thus the coal drawn up the downcast shaft, from the Busty level, was that from the Towneley, Tilley, and Busty Seams, whilst the coal from the Brockwell Seam was drawn up the upcast shaft from the Brockwell level.
