Description

Wingate Grange Coal Company - This colliery was first opened by Lord Howden and Partners, and has since become the property of the present company. It contains the following seams, varying in thickness from 2 feet 10 inches to 5 feet 2 inches, and at depths ranging from 80 to 147 fathoms: the Five Quarter, the Main, Low Main, Hutton, Harvey, and the Busty, three of which only are at present being worked. The average output is about 900 tons per day, giving employment to 700 men and boys. The coal is shipped at Hartlepool, and is known in London as the Caradoc.

The village of Wingate lies to the east of Thornley, ten miles east south east of Durham. Foundations supposed to be those of an old monastery have been discovered here, and also several anciently carved stones. Wingate Grange is now a considerable colliery village.

Literary Institute contains a library of about 700 vols., recreation, reading rooms, and large lecture hall. The cost of erection, &c., was defrayed partly by the colliery owners, and partly by subscription.
