Description

The coal in this township [Washington] is worked by the Washington Coal Co., at which pit there are being worked the Main Coal seam, 3 feet 4 inches thick ; the Maudlin, 4 feet 7 inches to 6 feet thick ; the Low Main, 3 feet 6 inches ; and the Hutton, 3 feet 1 inch thick ; the depths of the several seams being 80, 90, 101, and 113 fathoms respectively. During the past five years great improvements have been effected in the plant, and new offices were opened in 1893. There are between 800 and 900 men and boys employed in the various departments.

Patterson, Ralph Alexander, 18 Mar 1903, aged 68, Shifter, A place was to be turned away out of a landing on an engine plane in the Main Coal seam, and deceased and another shifter, who was injured, were engaged placing a running balk under the ends of four balks extending across the road and supporting the roof so that the props under these balks could be removed to get access to the side. The four balks had been middle propped, and the running balk put under their ends in a temporary manner, and they were preparing to put in a permanent prop at one end of it when the roof collapsed. The stone is short blue metal. The Local Inspectors reported that deceased "was accidentally killed by a fall of stone, which was a pure accident." [Sunderland Echo reports: accident - 19 Mar 1903 pg 6]
