Description

The coal royalties of this township [Urpeth] are worked by the Birtley Iron Company, who are at present working the Five Quarter, Low Main, and Busty seams at the Busty pit. The Five Quarter is 27 fathoms deep and 3 feet thick ; the Low Main varies from 2 feet 10 inches to 3 feet 9 inches, and is 37 fathoms ; the Busty, 115 fathoms, is 5 feet thick. There are 300 men and boys employed, including those at the coke ovens, where a large quantuty of the output, 470 tons per day, is converted into coke. At the C pit the Hutton seam is wrought at a depth of 65 fathoms ; the Low Main is also working here. This pit, which employs 350 men, has a daily yield of 450 tons, and is extensively lighted by electricity.

Cavanagh, Michael, 28 Jan 1895, 12:30 p.m., 6th hour of shift, aged 60, Screener, some full waggons were being lowered from under the screens, and deceased had evidently forgotten about them, as he deliberately stepped back into the full-way, when the empties passed him; there was plenty of room between the two ways

      

Gibbons, James, 11 Oct 1914, (accident: 08 Oct 1914), aged 42, Master Shifter, A shot had been fired in the top canch and deceased was giving instructions to the stoneman for the next shot, when a large stone fell, without warning, from the side of the canch, causing injuries from which he died three days later.

Hall, John, 14 Sep 1891, 3:30 p.m., 10th hour of shift, aged 55, Horse Driver, fell in front of waggons and was run over [Inspection made & Inquest attended]

     

Heard, John Richard, 27 Jan 1898, aged 15, Helper Up, His work consisted in "helping-up" the putter with his empty tubs, after which he should have returned to the siding. On this occasion, however, he did not return to his proper place, and being caught by the full tub, which the putter was bringing out, was crushed between it and the prop [Inspection made & inquest attended], Buried: Holy Trinity Churchyard, Pelton

      

McBride, Joseph, 24 May 1899, aged 14, Masons Assistant, He was engaged on the top of some coke ovens on 24th May, complained of his head and shortly after died, as it was supposed, from the fumes of the ovens. A post-mortem examination revealed the fact that there had been a rupture and effusion into the cerebellum. An inspection of the place showed that it was impossible for the lad to have inhaled any of the gases [fatality reported during the year but not classified as a colliery accident]

     

Stokoe, Joseph, 14 Mar 1890, 7:00 a.m., 3rd hour of shift, aged 40, Hewer, fall of coal; deceased was working at the coal face, whilst a deputy was preparing a battery to fire a shot, when in an unaccountable way the charge exploded, bringing down the coal on to Stoker and killing him, Buried: Pelton Cemetery [More information ...]

Taylor, James, 10 Feb 1902, aged 17, Pony Putter, deceased's pony with tub were standing and he was bringing out another tub to couple on ; he was found with the two tubs together and his head injured, but how the accident happened could not be ascertained, Buried: Pelton Cemetery

      

Wilson, John Davidson, 10 Jan 1894, 9:10 a.m., 1st hour of shift, aged 35, Colliery Manager, Deceased was examining the underground endless rope haulage sheave when the rope caught his hand, and he was drawn amongst the machinery [Inspection made & inquest attended] [More information ...]
