Description

Usworth Colliery - This colliery works three seams, the Maudlin, Low Main, and Hutton. The sinking of the shaft was commenced in 1845, and reached the Maudlin seam in 1847, at a depth of 213 yards. The pit was afterwards sunk to the Hutton seam, which was reached at a depth of 370 yards ; the Low Main was passed through at a depth of 358 yards. The ventilation is produced by a 45 foot Guibal fan placed at the top of the upcast shaft. Coals are brought to the bottom of the shaft by three stationary engines ; electric bells are used for signalling on the engine planes. All the coals are drawn to bank from the level of the Hutton seam by a horizontal high pressure engine of 300 horse power (nominal) ; flat steel wire ropes are used. The cages are of steel, and each weighs 40 cwts., and brings up at one time six tubs of coal, each weighing when full 12 cwts. The average output is about 1000 tons per day, giving employment to about 750 men and boys. This is one of the many collieries belonging to Messrs. John Bowes & Partners, Limited.

Usworth Colliery School, erected in 1863 by the colliery company, for mixed and infants, has accommodation for 600 children, with average attendance of 400.

Miners' Hall, Usworth colliery, is a substantial brick building erected in 1891, at a cost of £1,800, and contains a large lecture hall, capable of holding 650 persons, reading, billiard, and committee rooms, also house for the caretaker.
