Description

The mine is situated on the south-eastern flank of the mountain from which it takes its name, and at a distance of about three-quarters of a mile from the summit. A rough cart-road connects it with the village of Laxey, from which it is distant about four miles. The top of the shaft is 908 feet above the sea level.

The property belongs to the Crown, but the mine has been leased to the Snaefell Mining Company, Limited, which has been in possession for many years.

The deposit worked at the Snaefell Mine is a vein which has an approximatelt north and south strike, and an average dip to the east of about 15° from the vertical. Its width varies from 6 inches to 40 feet, and it consists of the following minerals, viz., galena, zinc blende, copper pyrites, some iron pyrites, pyrrhotine, pearl spar, and calc spar. The surrounding rocks (country) are generally composed of clay-slate, now known as the "Barrule Slate," and considered to be of Cambrian or Silurian age.
