Allison, Thompson, 18 Feb 1913, aged 38, Stone Picker, deceased was walking on the belts and got his foot fast in the belt plates; he was dragged under the planks at the belt end and crushed

      

Ayre, Arthur, 18 Sep 1911, aged 21, Token Lad, he was removing a token from the end of a waggon when another waggon came down and he was jammed between the two; his head was crushed and he died almost immediately; he was accustomed to the work and should have been on the look out for another waggon coming

      

Crookes, William Henry, 10 Mar 1909, aged 18, Driver, He was driving between men filling shale and men stowing it. On his way from the latter to the former, he had been either riding on the shale tub or walking in front of it and had been caught and crushed between the end of the tub and a prop

      

Idle, Robert, 24 Sep 1908, aged 24, Miner, He and his marrow were filling a tub, when a large piece of dogger forming the roof fell, killing him and injuring his marrow. The dogger fell from three converging slips, and was dome-shaped. The place was the last lift of a pillar. The fall would weigh 2½ to 3 tons. The undermanager was in the place half an hour prior to the accident, but he did not notice anything unusual

      

North, Frederick, 13 Oct 1906, Miner, Death due to natural causes.

      

Ord, Sidney Frank, 20 Jul 1914, aged 20, Labourer, deceased was assisting to repair the road, at a curve, on a tramway leading to the shale tip; he foolishly stood inside the curve as a full set went up; the last tub got off the way and fouled a roller, with the result that the sudden strain on the rope pulled out all the curve rollers, allowing the rope to fly and catch deceased, who died in a few hours

      

Peacock, Mark, 26 Apr 1915, aged 53, Back Bye Deputy, suffered injuries to his head following a fall of stone, he was admitted to the Guisborough Chaloner Hospital but subsequenly died from his injuries leaving a wife and five children

      

Poskett, John, 11 Jun 1910, (accident: 08 Apr 1910), aged 26, Platelayer, A full tub had been left standing with one dreg in its wheels on a gradient averaging 1 in 72. Another full tub was being brought along the same road also with one iron dreg in the rear wheel and when it joined the standing tub with considerable force, the latter ran amain and knocked down Poskett who was 40 or 50 yards distant. The deceased was repairing the way at the time, and although there was a clear space of over 3 feet between the tub and the sides, in his anxiety to get clear he lost his light. Robson, William, 09 Sep 1903, aged 42, Assistant Deputy, when replacing a prop, which had been displaced by a stone from a shot, a fall occurred and killed him

      

Walker, John, 07 Jun 1904, aged 37, Deputy, while he was drawing a jud, a fall occurred from roof and killed him

     

Webster, William Robert, 04 Dec 1920, aged 19, Buried: Guisborough Cemetery

      

Welburn, Thomas, 03 Oct 1912, aged 16, Siding attendant, on his way outbye he stopped to speak to another siding attendant; the electric lights went out, and the latter thought deceased had switched them off; presently, however, he found deceased lying on his back insensible with one of the lighting cables, broken in his hand; his oil lamp was standing burning close at hand; it is not known what deceased was doing; the lighting wires were over 6 feet from the ground, quite out of the way of accidental contact; the pressure was 250 volts alternating; one wire was broken and the other had the insulation off for a length of 1½ inch; deceased was got clear and efficient artificial respiration was commenced 15 minutes after he got the shock, and continued for two hours without success [More information ...]

      

Wood, James, 01 Dec 1902, aged 18, Horse Leader, when travelling out-bye on an engine plane he met an empty set going inbye, and in getting out of the way of it stepped in front of a set of tubs, landing in a siding at the bottom of a self-acting incline, and the set ran over and killed him ; he should not have been where he was ; a proper travelling road is provided [More information ...]
