Miscellaneous Notes and Incidents for Skelton Park (Ironstone) |
Description
Skelton Mines, — The Skelton mines comprise Skelton Park and Skelton Old Shaft, the former having two shafts 385 ft. deep which are used for winding, pumping and ventilation. The winding engine is a horizontal twin compound with cylinders 19 3/8 in. and 32 in. dia. And 5 ft. stroke. The engine is equipped with a "Whitmore" overwind preventer and a King's slow banker and carries a parallel drum 9 ft. 1 in. dia. The headgear is 50 ft. high and is of pitch pine with steel-channel backstays. Steam is raised in two Lancashire boilers at a pressure of 150 lbs. per sq. in.
The main haulage is by endless rope which is driven by a 60-h.p. motor, and works both sides of the shaft. The pumping plant consists of two 4-stage turbine pumps, each of 700 galls. per min. against a head of 460 ft. Each pump is direct driven at 1,460 r.p.m. by a 150 h.p. motor working on the 440-volts supply.
Ventilation is by a 145 in. dia. "Schiele" double-inlet fan which is driven through a Hendry laminated belt by a 50/7½ b.h.p. two-speed squirrel-cage pole-changing motor with autotransformer starting. The normal capacity of this fan is 100,000 cub. ft. of air per min.
At the Old Shaft Mine there are two shafts 100 ft. deep, which, however, are now only in use for ventilation. The area around the shafts is being worked from an incline drift to the surface with a 150-h.p. main-rope haulage. The fan is a 55 in. dia. "Sirocco" propellor type delivering 33,000 cub. ft. of air per min.

Names of those killed at this colliery
Please note that this collection of names is by no means complete!
| | | | | | | Andrew, William, 03 Dec 1911, (accident: 29 Sep 1911), aged 21, Haulage Hand, he was found at his place of work evidently suffering pain, and said he had been nipped between waggons; he ultimately went home and did not work again; he was seen at his home by his usual medical attendant, who did not then, or at any time later, find any mark of injury; on 25th November he was taken to Middlesbrough Infirmary where he died on the 3rd December, the cause of death being given as Addison's disease; an inquest was held and a verdict returned that "he died from Addison's disease accelerated by an accident in Skelton Park Mine whilst following his employment." |
| | | | | | | Bailey, John, 16 Apr 1891, aged 36, Rolleywayman, died from the rupture of a blood vessel while at his work, Buried: Skelton in Cleveland, All Saints on 19 Apr 1891 {NBI} |
| | | | | | | Brack, John, 05 Oct 1911, (accident: 23 Sep 1911), aged 58, Deputy, he was engaged with three other deputies in timbering across an old bord, which had fallen many years ago, in order to make a road to work a pillar of stone; he was cutting a hole in the side for one end of a bearing balk, when some dogger and shale fell from above him and injured him about the head and body; all the men apparently satisfied themselves that the place was safe, but do not seem to have allowed for the possibility of a break existing, although such breaks are known to exist under similar conditions; if some long sprags had been set, the probabilities are that the accident would not have happened; the unfortunate man lived until October 5th, 1911 |
| | | | | | | Bringeloe, George, 16 Apr 1881, aged 36, Miner, fall of stone after a shot, deceased and deputy were putting in props, Buried: Skelton in Cleveland, All Saints on 20 Apr 1881 {NBI} |
| | | | | | | Bringloe, Herbert, 11 Feb 1933, aged 56, Buried: Skelton Cemetery |
| | | | | | | Chambers, John, 09 Jun 1894, 7:00 a.m., 1st hour of shift, aged 32, Machineman, While assisting to remove a drilling machine to another place it got off the way, tilted over, and killed him, Buried: Skelton in Cleveland, All Saints on 11 Jun 1894 {NBI} [More information ...] |
| | | | | | | Christon, Ralph, 08 Mar 1906, (accident: 27 Feb 1906), aged 45, Filler, When working in the brokens, a piece of stone fell off the side and broke both bones of his left leg. He died 10 days afterwards from shock. |
| | | | | | | Dunning, William Allen, 21 Oct 1911, (accident: 19 Oct 1911), aged 17, Driver, he was bringing his horse to the stables at the end of the shift and was followed by two other drivers, each with a horse; on arriving at the stables he stepped to one side to allow the horses to pass; the first two passed quietly but the third struck out and kicked him in the stomach inflicting injuries from which he died in the infirmary on October 21st; the horse was not of a vicious character |
| | | | | | | Elcoate, Thomas, 21 Apr 1904, (accident: 08 Jan 1904), aged 38, Filler, filling a tub of ironstone when a small piece burst suddenly off side and caused a slight wound on his head; little was thought of it but he died on April 21st |
| | | | | | | Finchin, John, 07 May 1877, aged 50, Miner, crushed between two tubs |
| | | | | | | Garbutt, William, 02 Jul 1912, aged 28, Miner, he and his mate were driving a lift out of a split wall which had holed; they had only got some 6 feet in, but the crossing timber being set, and the place well timbered, Garbutt fired his two bottom shots, one after the other, and had gone back to examine after the second shot when the whole place collapsed and he was buried; constant efforts were made for three hours to rescue him, during which time line was alive and conversing with his rescuers; then another heavy fall took place and he was heard no more; his body was recovered after another two hours' bard work; probably the second shot being a heavy one had removed the support from the crossing balk |
| | | | | | | Grainge, Henry, 03 Jan 1879, aged 21, Miner, fall of ironstone after a shot, it had been examined shortly before |
| | | | | | | Granger, R., 16 Oct 1882, aged 60, Labourer, fall of stone from roof while filling a tub |
| | | | | | | Jefferson, John, 20 May 1875, aged 22, Platelayer, crushed by tubs, Buried: Skelton in Cleveland, All Saints on 25 May 1875 {NBI} |
| | | | | | | Kyme, Samuel, 08 Apr 1908, aged 62, Deputy, When setting up a baulk, a huge piece of stone, weighing about 7 tons, fell away from a visible but not well-defined back. The place was near the goaf, and no doubt there was great weight on the pillars which caused the stone to fall |
| | | | | | | Lewis, Edward, 12 Apr 1876, aged 22, Miner, broken leg and other severe injuries by fall of stone while baring |

| | | | | | | Ridley, George, 28 Nov 1900, aged 18, Attending endless rope, He was employed to see that tubs went round the curves on endless rope all right, and by some means he got caught between a tub and a curve and was killed. Probability is that he was riding on tub at time., Buried: Skelton in Cleveland, All Saints on 02 Dec 1900 {NBI} [More information ...] |
| | | | | | | Robinson, Alfred, 16 Dec 1905, aged 53, Miner, fall of roof; deceased had finished his own shift and had gone into another place to help his son to fill his last two tubs; the roof weighted suddenly and some dogger fell on him |
| | | | | | | Rowe, Hugh, 17 Aug 1883, aged 32, Miner, explosion of a shot; had lighted two shots in a place, one of them not going off at the time he went back too soon, when it exploded [More information ...] |
| | | | | | | Scuffam, Thomas Henry, 15 Apr 1898, aged 17, Horse Leader, when coming out-bye with a set of full tubs, down a gradient of 1 in 36, he either slipped or caught his foot against a sleeper and fell in front of the tubs, and three of them passed over him crushing him so severely that he was killed instantly, Buried: Skelton Cemetery |
