Description

Skelton Mines, — The Skelton mines comprise Skelton Park and Skelton Old Shaft, the former having two shafts 385 ft. deep which are used for winding, pumping and ventilation. The winding engine is a horizontal twin compound with cylinders 19 3/8 in. and 32 in. dia. And 5 ft. stroke. The engine is equipped with a "Whitmore" overwind preventer and a King's slow banker and carries a parallel drum 9 ft. 1 in. dia. The headgear is 50 ft. high and is of pitch pine with steel-channel backstays. Steam is raised in two Lancashire boilers at a pressure of 150 lbs. per sq. in.

The main haulage is by endless rope which is driven by a 60-h.p. motor, and works both sides of the shaft. The pumping plant consists of two 4-stage turbine pumps, each of 700 galls. per min. against a head of 460 ft. Each pump is direct driven at 1,460 r.p.m. by a 150 h.p. motor working on the 440-volts supply.

Ventilation is by a 145 in. dia. "Schiele" double-inlet fan which is driven through a Hendry laminated belt by a 50/7½ b.h.p. two-speed squirrel-cage pole-changing motor with autotransformer starting. The normal capacity of this fan is 100,000 cub. ft. of air per min.

At the Old Shaft Mine there are two shafts 100 ft. deep, which, however, are now only in use for ventilation. The area around the shafts is being worked from an incline drift to the surface with a 150-h.p. main-rope haulage. The fan is a 55 in. dia. "Sirocco" propellor type delivering 33,000 cub. ft. of air per min.
