Description

Shildon Lodge Colliery, worked by Messrs. Bolckow, Vaughan, & Co., is in the township [Shildon], where the "Brockwell" seam is met 5 feet 6 inches thick at a depth of 120 fathoms, yielding an output of 800 tons per day.

Anderson, George, 14 Jun 1904, aged 33, Fitter, he was hurrying along a long wall face to repair a coal cutter; two men had prepared and lit a powder shot in the top canch of a gateway; one went along the face and the other to the cross gateway to prevent anyone approaching the shot; the one in the face saw someone coming, and shouted repeatedly to him to keep back, but he apparently had not heard and got close to the shot when it exploded and the stones from it hit him about the head and shoulders, causing fatal injuries; died 3¾ hours afterwards [More information ...]

      

Anderson, Joseph, 13 May 1890, (accident: 09 May 1890), aged 48, Stoneman, while in the act of stemming a hole charged with powder it exploded burning him severely [More information ...]

      

Anderson, Robert, 05 Sep 1900, aged 51, Shifter, He had gone down the pit for the purpose of commencing work; he complained of feeling ill, and sat down and died almost immediately.

Brice, Edward, 06 Jul 1871, aged 12, Wailer, going from one place to another, when at work, by a road which the workmen were forbidden to use, he was crushed between a truck and an embankment wall

Chaplin, Ernest, 03 Aug 1905, aged 14, Incline Boy, although told not to do so, he got on to an empty tram which was being run down an incline; sprags were in the wheels, but one broke and the train ran amain and threw him off, breaking his neck [More information ...]

Charlton, George Frederick Agne, 03 Dec 1888, aged 43, Engine Fitter, while engaged in removing the drum of an underground incline, it fell over and crushed him to death [Inquest 08 Dec 1888]

      

Chaytor, George, 30 May 1894, 10:45 a.m., 2nd hour of shift, aged 37, Hewer, Fall of a mass of coal while turning away a loose end place next to goaf, Buried: Holy Trinity, Cornforth on 03 Jun 1894 {NBI}

      

Coates, George, 18 Jul 1907, aged 40, Waiter-on, crushed by three tubs at the pit bottom, his leg was broken and he died a week afterwards

      

Collinson, George W., 22 Nov 1909, aged 14, Driver, No one witnessed this accident, but it is supposed that he had dropped his whip and that in leaning over to reach it he had overbalanced himself and had fallen off the limbers. His head may in this way have been squeezed between a corner of the tub and a prop at the side of the road, and then his body pushed out of the way by the slowly moving tubs

      

Costelo, John, 01 Jan 1884, aged 30, Hewer, died while at his work in the pit; surroundings all good; natural causes [fatality reported during the year but not classified as a colliery accident]

      

Cullen, John, 05 Nov 1872, aged 60, Hewer, killed by a fall of coal

      

Dalkin, John, 08 Feb 1908, aged 33, Joiner, When helping to take rails down the pit he fell off the cage top into the pit bottom and was killed [Reported in Inspectors Report as John Dalking]

      

Dixon, John, 13 Nov 1913, (accident: 06 Nov 1913), aged 26, Filler, deceased was preparing to charge a shot, and placed the powder on the floor near a prop, on which was stuck his lighted candle; the candle fell and ignited the powder, burning him severely; he died seven days later

      

Dunn, Richard, 13 Jul 1874, aged 25, Joiner, run over by a truck

      

Elliott, George Urvine, 17 Aug 1904, aged 47, Packer, about to build a pack and had drawn a prop which was in his way, when a large stone 8 ft. long, 4 ft. 6 ins, wide by 2 ft. thick fell upon and fatally crushed him; several props were displaced by the fall

Hollandsworth, W., 21 Jan 1869, aged 12, Wailer, crushed between two waggons

      

Horden, John, 13 May 1871, aged 16, Set Rider, rope broke; tubs ran amain and joined other tubs on which he was riding and crushed him

      

Hutchinson, John, 30 Aug 1897, aged 49, Hewer, While lying kirving, a portion of a seggar band fell upon and killed him. He neglected to set a sprag prop [More information ...]

      

Jacques, James, 15 Dec 1885, aged 47, Deputy, fall of a large stone while drawing out a jud

      

Jeffrey, Thomas, 05 Oct 1890, (accident: 03 Oct 1890), aged 40, Hewer, while sitting kirving some coal fell breaking his collar-bone and crushing him severely, he had neglected to use sprags

     

Leech, Thomas, 10 Feb 1857, Hewer, he was working in the same board as Leonard Wensley æwhen a large stone about three yards in length, fell from the roofÆ and crushed him to death. The roof had been well propped and the props had not been disturbed by the fall

      

Leigh, Francis Edgar, 16 Feb 1912, aged 39, Hewer, he was kirving at the face of a bord when a large stone fell from a "roll" in the roof and killed him instantly; both he and his marrow were aware of this "roll" and had timbered it as they thought securely, but the stone apparently moved sideways and canted the timber out

Martin, Ephrahim, 13 Nov 1901, (accident: 09 Nov 1901), aged 28, Spare Putter, while pushing an empty tub on to an east incline, the large link that connected two full tubs to the rope of an incline on the West Side, which was running at the time, broke, and let the two tubs amain, they ran across the road at the bottom and crushed him against the empty set

      

Mather, Alfred, 11 Mar 1902, aged 17, Incline Boy, caught and killed by set at the bottom of an incline ; he was putting the chain on to an empty set when the empty tubs, at the top, ran amain down the incline, and caught him between them and the tubs he was putting the chain on [More information ...]

McNaughton, William, 21 Oct 1889, aged 26, Labourer, was scalded to death while engaged in repairing pipes in an underground steam drift

      

Metcalfe, Christopher, 15 Jul 1898, aged 13, Driver, he and another boy were putting on clips on an endless rope — the gradient is 4 inches per yard and sets of three tubs are attached to the rope and clips put on at each end of the set — the boy at the front end got his clip on, but this boy had not got his on properly, and shouted to the other boy who eased his, and this allowed the tubs to run back, and they caught and killed Metcalfe instantly

      

Nunn, George, 27 Apr 1876, aged 15, Driver, fall of side stone while driving along rolleyway

      

Pattison, George, 11 Dec 1906, (accident: 21 Nov 1906), aged 60, Hewer, When kirving, a piece of stone fell from a joint over the coal and broke his shin bone. Inflammation of the lungs set in, and he died on December 11th.

Ranson, George, 15 Nov 1900, (accident: 13 Nov 1900), aged 29, Boiler minder, He had been repairing a broken bolt on the eccentric strap of an engine and started it again, he then stooped down to pick up a lamp when his coat became entangled with a bolt on the coupling of a shaft and was dragged over before the machinery could be stopped. Robinson, Thomas Henry, 10 Sep 1917, aged 36, he and his marra William Davies were caught by a heavy fall of stone weighing about 2 tons; Robinson was killed instantly and Davies received slight injuries

Waites, James Bowes, 28 Aug 1923, (accident: 27 Aug 1923), aged 47, died in hospital after being run over by a set of tubs the previous day

      

Whitfield, Frederick, 13 Mar 1900, aged 14, Engine plane lad, A pump is worked by an endless rope driven by the hauling engine, and he by some means was drawn in by the rope on the driving wheel and killed.

      

Williams, George, 08 May 1899, aged 52, Hewer, He complained of being unwell, and left his place about 7 a.m. to go home. As the back shift men were going to work, about 10 a.m., they found him lying dead in a refuge hole. There were no marks or bruises on any part of the body.

     

Wilson, Christopher, 05 Jul 1901, aged 13, Screen Boy, he was piling timber up in the timber yard and left his work to ask the man in charge of the branch horses what time it was and remained with his back against a stack of timber to see the horses pull a truck past; the truck side caught him and he was pulled in front of wheels, which passed over and killed him [More information ...]

     

Wilson, William, 16 Jan 1918, (accident: 18 Dec 1917), sustained a compound fracture of the lower leg and died at Bishop Auckland Cottage Hospital
