Description

Coal is wrought in this township [East Thickley or Thickley Punchardon] by the Shildon Coal Co., Limited, at Shildon Colliery, where the "Busty" and "Brockwell" seams are met : the former, at a depth of 26 fathoms, containing a band of bluestone from 10 inches to 12 feet thick, thus splitting this seam into two sections of 2 feet 10 inches each. The Brockwell is 49 fathoms, and is 5 feet 3 inches thick. The output from this colliery is about 450 tons per day, and gives employment to 240 men and boys.

Alderson, Matthew, 05 Feb 1880, (accident: 22 Jan 1880), aged 56, Collier, severely crushed by fall of coal while kirving his jud

      

Askew, George, 16 May 1902, (accident: 07 May 1902), aged 46, Shaftman, when putting ladders in the upcast shaft the engineman was lowering them and lost control of the engine and ran the kibble hard on to the bottom ; both had broken legs and internal injuries ; Askew died on the 16th inst. and O'Hagan on June 10th [More information ...]

Clement, Alfred, 30 Sep 1882, (accident: 27 Sep 1882), aged 14, Roller Greaser, foot torn off and otherwise injured by getting entangled in the return wheel on engine plane

      

Collinson, Joseph, 29 Apr 1882, (accident: 12 Apr 1882), aged 35, Hewer, foot severely crushed by a piece of coal falling off the jud while kirving

      

Davis, William, 13 Sep 1900, aged 15, Runrider, Fell down in front of set of tubs, which so severely injured him that he afterwards died.

     

Dent, George, 09 Feb 1957, aged 40, he was killed while riding on a conveyor belt, two other men also rode on the belt but jumped off when they reached the loading point, but Dent lay down in order to pass under the loading point which gave only 14 inches clearance, and it struck his head, fracturing his skull

      

Jaffrey, Hosea, 23 Mar 1885, aged 41, Hewer, fall of stone from a slip, turning away jud

Nicholson, Henry, 13 Nov 1900, (accident: 12 Nov 1900), aged 67, Horsekeeper, Head and chest injured by moving tubs running into him. Died the following day.

Perry, Richard C., 19 Apr 1877, aged 16, Dataler, death from concussion of the brain, caused by falling while at work in the pit

      

Reed, William, 20 Aug 1897, (accident: 12 Aug 1897), aged 34, Hewer, When hewing, a piece of coal flew and cut his nose. Erysipelas set in, and he died on the 20th

     

Robinson, George, 28 Mar 1883, (accident: 27 Mar 1883), aged 14, he got on an empty truck on the surface which was passing at the time; he got off near his home and was passing under the trucks when he was run over and critically injured; he died the following day

      

Smith, Charles H., 29 Jan 1903, aged 31, Shot Firer, he was hit on the thigh with a small piece of stone from an ammonite shot which caused a wound the size of a two shilling piece; tetanus set in and he died on the 28th inst.

     

Smith, William James, 27 Jan 1923, aged 46, killed by a fall of stone at the coal face in the Harvey seam

      

Tinkler, R. B., 24 Nov 1874, aged 16, Putter, killed by a fall of coal

      

Wright, John Morgan, 09 Apr 1875, aged 15, Driver, crushed between wall side and tub
