Names of those killed at this colliery

Please note that this collection of names is by no means complete!

Ainsworth, Edward, 15 Jan 1899, (accident: 12 Jan 1899), aged 30, Miner, About 20 feet of an ordinary timbered drift suddenly collapsed, burying the two men. Ainsworth was rescued after being entombed for 33 hours, apparently little worse, but he succumbed to shock on the 15th January. The place was well wooded and apparently secure. The right side consisted of solid ore; the ore on the other side having been worked out, although there was scarcely any open ground remaining. The roof was simply a mass of old wood and debris left from working previous heights, and it is very unusual for sudden falls to occur in ground of this character [Inspection made & inquest attended] [More information ...]

Bailey, William, 24 Aug 1883, aged 50, Miner, killed by a fall of roof

Bell, Joseph, 19 Dec 1877, Miner, repairing timber - took out support before putting a new one in

Boreland, James, 09 Apr 1900, aged 20, Miner, A shot had been fired which blew out a leg and let down the third head-tree from the working face. Apparently they were examining the damage done, when a fall occurred, displacing another set of wood, and burying both men. No one was working near, and the two men were entombed for a period of five hours before being discovered. Boreland was got out alive, but subsequently succumbed to shock. [Inspection made & inquest attended] [More information ...]

Coulson, Frederick, 29 Mar 1911, aged 19, Locomotive Stoker, caught between buffers while attempting to pass between moving waggons

Coward, John, 29 Mar 1913, aged 57, Miner, deceased and his mate were working out with picks the ground shattered by two shots which had been fired half-an-hour previously, when an explosion occurred; deceased's pick had evidently struck some gelignite left by incomplete detonation of a previous charge; the other man was seriously injured

Ellis, Thomas, 03 Oct 1904, aged 50, Top hand [More information ...]

Huddlestone, Thomas, 09 Apr 1900, aged 29, Miner, A shot had been fired which blew out a leg and let down the third head-tree from the working face.

Jackson, Emmanuel, 08 Jun 1912, aged 66, Pumpman, he was affixing a heavy iron plate to the pump rod at a mid inset, when the plate slipped out of the tackle and smashed the stage on which he was standing, thereby precipitating him on to another stage 60 fathoms lower down

Mawson, Hartley, 06 Jul 1897, aged 25, Miner, Deceased and another man were robbing out the ore from a "ginnel" or vein. The vertical height of the open or worked out vein was about 40 feet, and the width at bottom, where the men were working, about 20 feet. The top and sides of the vein were hard rock, and the place was being worked without timber. The accident was caused by a piece of stone falling from the foot-wall at a point about 30 feet from the floor, and striking both men on its descent. An improved method of working places of this description has been adopted [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Miller, John, 12 Dec 1878, aged 53, Miner, crushed by cage

Pickthall, James, 18 Apr 1902, (accident: 17 Apr 1902), aged 55, Miner, this fatality occurred in a narrow vein working ; the place was close timbered; the headtrees being covered in the usual way and then loaded with debris; despite this precaution, a fall of roof displaced. several courses of timber and completely covered deceased

Pope, James, 01 Oct 1878, aged 46, Miner, fell down a rise

Relph, Thomas, 14 Feb 1896, aged 33, Miner, The hanging side of a vein working suddenly collapsed, burying deceased, whose body was not recovered until the lapse of 15 hours. The upper portion of the worked-out vein was timbered with pillars and "stemples," and the working had been officially examined only half an hour previous to the accident, and considered perfectly safe [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Rigg, James, 30 Jul 1908, aged 30, Miner, fall of ground from the face while in the act of working it out with a pick

Simpson, William, 12 Jan 1899, aged 55, Miner, About 20 feet of an ordinary timbered drift suddenly collapsed, burying the two men.

Wilkins, Thomas, 11 Feb 1884, aged 29, Miner, crushed between cage and shaft timber

Wilson, George, 26 Nov 1898, aged 29, Miner, Deceased had improperly gone into an old working to take out a "fork" or prop, when the place suddenly collapsed. Whether his action caused the fall or not is uncertain, but his working-place was unaffected thereby, and he would have been perfectly safe had he remained therein [Inspection made & inquest attended]
