1840 - A bore-hole was put down from the surface a quarter of a mile south of Hartbushes Farm House for the owners of Rodridge Colliery, by W. Coulson. |

1841 - Commenced to sink Rodridge or South Wingate Colliery from the surface, proving the lowest coals. |
|
1843 - Trimdon Colliery and South Wingate Colliery commenced shipping coal. |
|
1844 - Commenced to sink Rodridge or South Wingate Colliery from the bottom of the sump, 30 fathoms lower, but without finding any further workable coal. |

| | | | |  | | Bailey, James, 11 Sep 1849, aged 22, While at work in the north-east part of South Wingate Colliery on 11 September, James Bailey, 22, was crushed by a large stone which fell on him from the roof. The place was sufficiently propped, and the death of the deceased can be attributed to no other cause than his own imprudence in curving so far under the stone which is part of the band between the upper and lower portions of the seam before removing it. |
| | | | |  | | Barrow, William, 14 Mar 1843, aged 38, Sinker, while working in the shaft of South Wingate sinking pit, he was struck by a piece of timber which had been placed across the top of the shaft to help direct the ropes. The timber had fallen down the shaft and hit him on the head. He was taken home but died soon afterwards |
