Barrass, Norman, 20 Nov 1932, (accident: 02 Nov 1932), aged 38, Cutter, fall of stone, died from injuries received, Buried: Pelton Cemetery

Blacklock, Matthew, 13 Dec 1893, 2:30 a.m., 10th hour of shift, aged 60, Wasteman, He was ridding an old headways, and, after crossing a bord, he had set up two planks with props under one end, and was clearing the ground for the props under the other ends when a stone fell from over the corner of the pillar. He had attempted to get this stone down, but failed to do so [Inspection made]

Buck, Thomas, 05 Dec 1933, aged 38, Filler, killed by a fall of stone, Buried: Pelton Cemetery

      

Cain, Daniel, 12 May 1902, aged 29, Hewer, deceased was leaving the pit at the end of his shift ; a hauling engine at the top of an incline draws the loaded chaldron waggons in use here up the incline, and it is customary to couple on behind the loaded waggons a few empty ones and draw them up the incline a short distance when they are disconnected, spragged and allowed to run back into the various roads at the pit ; deceased got on to the set intending to ride to the bank head on his way home, but getting on to the empty waggons by mistake he was crushed between them-in some way after they were disconnected and commenced to run back

      

Curry, William, 15 Dec 1891, 9:00 p.m., 6th hour of shift, aged 32, Stoneman, after drawing some timber and whilst still engaged drawing timber a fall of stone occurred [Inspection made & Inquest attended]

Gardener, William, 02 Dec 1826, On Friday night a man named William Gardener, employed at the Street Pitt, at Ravensworth Colliery in fastening on the courves, overreached himself and fell to the bottom of the shaft, by which he was instantly killed. Verdict of coroners - Accidental death [Date of report in Newcastle Chronicle]

Haylock, George Henry, 09 Sep 1903, (accident: 07 Sep 1903), aged 16, Pick Carrier, While deceased was descending a stair from the pit head to the ground level he jumped on to the side rail, evidently with the intention of sliding down, but overbalancing himself fell to the ground, a distance of 16 or 17 feet. He landed on his face and belly, and, although he was able to walk home, must have sustained some serious internal injury. Studs have been placed at intervals on the rails to prevent boys sliding down.

Johnson, George, 29 Oct 1930, aged 21, Putter, killed by a fall of stone; the accident happened in the week he was due to be married ; he had finished his shift and had just come up from the mine when the deputy stopped him and asked him if he wanted to go back down and earn some more money, seeing as he was getting married on the following Saturday; George of course jumped at the chance and unfortunately this cost him his life, Buried: St. Andrews Churchyard, Lamesley

Kenny, James, 21 Mar 1943, (accident: 18 Mar 1943), aged 54, Hewer, killed by a fall of stone, Buried: Pelton Cemetery

      

MacGregor, Alexander, 13 Jul 1892, aged 15, was proceeding from his work, when he attempted to get on to a set of loaded waggons whilst they were in motion on the colliery waggonway, when by some means he fell under the wheels, and received such injuries that he shortly after died; it transpired at the inquest that although notices were posted at different points warning the men from riding on the waggons, it was regularly done by the workmen when proceeding to and from their homes

Monaghan, Owen, 02 Sep 1902, (accident: 22 Aug 1902), aged 17, Pony Putter, deceased stated to a doctor that he had hurt himself while lifting a tub on to the rails ; an inquest was held and a post mortem examination made, and it was found that the cause of death was acute pleuro-pneumonia, and not due to any injury

O'Neil, Charles, 16 Nov 1896, (accident: 18 Jul 1896), aged 16, Driver, He was injured by a fall of coal and stone whilst standing near some men working in a roadway. Died on November 16th [Inquest attended]

Rutherford, J. T. S., 09 Oct 1946, (accident: 08 Oct 1946), aged 44, Stoneman, killed by a fall of stone

      

Sainthouse, Paul, 16 Sep 1904, aged 45, Hewer, Deceased appears to have been sitting on his cracket in a longwall place kyrving in the bottom coal of the Beaumont seam, which has the following section - ramble 2 inches, top coal 2 feet 1 inch, band 9 inches, and bottom coal 1 foot. The band, top coal and ramble overhung for a length of 8 feet and a depth of 2 feet, and this overhanging mass fell on him, causing such injuries that he died the same day. The fall came away from an ordinary bordways cleet or facing, and a keen parting above the ramble. Sprags should have been set, but he appears to have neglected this precaution. The Local Inspectors reported "we, the undersigned, think it was a pure accident."

      

Sambles, John, 04 Jul 1893, 8:30 a.m., 4th hour of shift, aged 30, Hewer, He was taking off the last part of the "lift," when the deputy went into the place, and had pricked through into the waste at one point. The deputy had a prop ready to set, and was waiting whilst the deceased hewed some of the bottom coals to fill his tub, when the stone fell from a slippery fracture, crushing down the coal and canting out a prop, and causing instant death [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Watson, William, 01 Oct 1864, aged 61, stuck head out of cage and was struck by a falling stone

      

Watts, W., 13 Aug 1939, (accident: 01 Jun 1934), aged 36, Filler, died from injuries received

     

Weaman, Alexander, 23 Jun 1917, (accident: 18 Jun 1917), aged 36, Hewer, fall of stone

      

Weartherhead, Henry, 28 Jul 1904, (accident: 10 Jun 1904), aged 57, Hewer, While deceased was nicking his jud of coal in a stenton 6 feet wide in the Six Quarter seam a piece of coal weighing about 20lbs. Fell on to his left knee, which was bare, inflicting a cut about 1¼ inches long and 1 inch deep. No bleeding ensued and deceased was able to walk home. He was attended by a doctor and the wound cleaned and his leg bandaged. The wound gathered and deceased worked no more. On July 16, in consequence of blood poisoning set in, he was sent to Newcastle Infirmary, where he died. He is stated to have been a healthy man. The Jury found that death was due to blood poisoning resulting from the injury
