Alton, John Henry, 04 Oct 1900, aged 45, Deputy, He was caught and killed by a fall of stone while drawing a jud., Buried: St. Cuthbert Parish Churchyard, Etherley

Brown, Ralph, 24 Jul 1916, aged 55, killed by a fall of stone

      

Dawson, John, 28 Oct 1906, (accident: 05 Oct 1906), aged 67, Shifter, His head was cut by a stone which fell from the roof. Erysipelas set in and he died on October 28th.

      

Eales, Walter, 19 Oct 1903, aged 25, Hewer, took ill in the pit, and died from natural causes soon after reaching his home

      

Gibson, William, 23 Feb 1923, (accident: 12 Feb 1923), aged 60, Deputy, slipped

     

Goldsborough, George, 11 Sep 1915, suffocated when he fell into a settling tank; at the inquest a verdict of death by "suffocation" was recorded

     

Henderson, Walter, 10 Aug 1910, (accident: 08 Aug 1910), aged 33, Hewer, He was working in a split 10 feet wide, rising 3 inches per yard, which was holed into the goaf at the left side of the face, thus having a width of 6 feet at the right side, and under which he had kirved for a distance of 4 feet. He was found lying off the bottom canch clear of any coals by a putter who went in to him, and he had evidently been knocked there by part of the jud which had fallen away. A jud prop had been set under the coal, but apparently not in such a manner as to prevent the jud coming away from two slips at the back side, and it had been canted out. He died two days later, Buried: Evenwood Cemetery

Hordon, Robert, 27 Mar 1911, aged 45, Joiner, a broken tumbler shaft forming part of a Luhrig washer was being replaced by a new one, which was lying on a wooden floor; the broken shaft was slung in an inclined position from blocks suspended from three legs; the latter were not secured to the floor, and as the lower end of the shaft was clearing an aperture between two girders 4 feet apart, it swung round and knocked against one of the legs, causing all three to collapse; Hordon was struck by one of the legs and fell against the new shaft on the floor, and while in this position the broken shaft crushed him and injured him internally

McConnel, Albert, 18 Mar 1911, aged 14, Greaser, no one saw this accident happen; he was found under a full tub on the way, between a creeper and a tippler, on the heapstead; his duties were not connected with the tub until it had passed into the tippler; probably he was improperly riding on the front of the tub and fell off, Buried: Evenwood Cemetery

Orton, Cleveland William, 05 Jul 1936, aged 34, Putter, he was killed by a runaway tub; the haulage rope had broken causing the tub to run amain [More information ...]

      

Proud, J. H., 26 Jan 1944, (accident: 24 Jan 1944), aged 21, Putter, crushed by tubs

      

Robinson, John Thomas, 20 Jan 1910, (accident: 19 Jan 1910), aged 28, Locomotive Fireman, A special siding had been put in to discharge material for patent coke ovens in course of erection. On the occasion of the accident the last of three empty waggons was standing on the points, and all the waggons had to be moved along the siding to clear t

      

Stonebank, Joseph Eric, 1936, aged 17, (approximate date) died in Darlington Memorial Hospital

      

Stringer, Joseph, 08 Jan 1901, (accident: 29 Dec 1900), aged 55, Deputy, died from an injury received on 29th December last, by hitting his head against the side of a refuge hole, into which he had gone when firing a shot

      

Taylor, John Robert, 09 Feb 1896, (accident: 07 Feb 1896), aged 38, Shifter, While walking on the waggon-way, he attempted to put some of his tools on to the top of a tub in a pony set and got his head caught between tub and roof. Died on the 9th

      

Towers, Harry, 1906, aged 14, killed by a fall of stone

     

Towers, Harry, 14 Dec 1906, aged 14, Driver, He was waiting at the bottom of an incline with his empty set when four full tubs came amain down the incline and killed him. The four full tubs knocked out the safety chock which was in position and shut., Buried: Evenwood Cemetery

      

Towers, J. W., 25 Jun 1942, (accident: 07 Jun 1942), aged 46, Shifter, died from injuries received

     

Walker, Arthur, 18 Oct 1938, aged 18, Pony Driver, there were no witnesses to the accident, but it is thought that his head had become fastened between a tub and a prop while riding on the limbers, Buried: Cockfield Cemetery

      

Watson, Joseph, 02 Nov 1906, (accident: 01 Nov 1906), Shifter, Had an apoplectic seizure whilst in the mine and died the following day.

      

White, William, 14 Mar 1925, aged 49, Hewer, killed by a fall of stone

      

Wilson, Frederick Blackett, 13 Jan 1899, aged 32, Hewer, He was finishing the kirving of a jud when it fell away and caught and killed him.

      

Wilson, Thomas, 07 Nov 1912, (accident: 04 Nov 1912), aged 33, Hewer, he was kirving when the coal came over from a "back," displacing his sprag; he died from his injuries three days later
