Miscellaneous Notes and Incidents for North Skelton (Ironstone) |
Description
North Skelton Mine is the deepest mine in Cleveland, the winding shaft, which is 720 ft. in depth, being 400 ft. below sea level. The seam rises at an inclination of 3 in. to the yd. towards the north, where it is again entered at Longacres pit at a depth of 280 ft., a miles distant from the North Skelton shaft. Until 1915 Longacres was a separate mine, but the shafts are now only used for ventilation and the winding of men and material, the whole of the output being delivered to the North Skelton shaft down a self-acting incline 1,650 yds. in length.
North Skelton mine lies in a basin, so that the seam rises in all directions to a greater or lesser extent, and this allows of the employment of a system of self-acting inclines to bring the stone from the face to the main haulage roads, where it is handled by main-and-tail haulages. For this duty there are two electrically-driven haulages, one of 350 and the other of 200 h.p., which are situated at the bottom of the shaft.
The mine water is dealt with by three 6-stage turbine pumps, which are directly driven at 1,460 r.p.m. by 340 b.h.p. slip ring motors working on the 2,750-volt supply. Each of the pumps is capable of delivering 1,000 galls. per min. against a head of 740 ft.
The winding at North Skelton is performed by a horizontal twin-cylinder non-condensing steam engine, 36-in, cylinders by 6 ft. stroke, carrying a plain cylindrical drum 18 ft. 6 in. dia. The engine is fitted with the "Whitmore" overwind preventer and King's slow banker, together with the "Whitmore" steam brake. The maximum rope speed is 30.6 ft. per sec. and the winding time 36 secs. Steam is raised in four Lancashire boilers, fitted with "Turbine" forced-draft furnaces, which are fitted with coal-washeries residues mixed with coke breeze. Winding at Longacres is by means of a small, geared, electric hoist.
Separate ventilation systems are employed at North Skelton and Longacres. The North Skelton fan is a 105 in. doubleinlet "Sirocco" of normal capacity of 111,000 ft. per min. The drive is through Hendry laminated belt by a two-speed pole-changing 50-cycle squirrel-cage motor of 120 h.p. The Longacres fan is a single-inlet "Sirocco" 91 in. dia. of a normal duty of 51,000 cub. ft. per min. It is motor driven in a similar manner to the North Skelton fan. The motors in both instances are fitted with auto-transformer starters.
