Names of those killed at this colliery

Please note that this collection of names is by no means complete!

Ainsley, Samuel, 16 Aug 1914, aged 52, Chargeman, A pair of headings rising 3 inches to the yard, with stentons every 10 yards, driven 40 yards from a right hand cross-heading, had been standing some weeks. A recent change had been made in the ventilation which took the main pressure of air off the headings. Ainsley, carrying a safety lamp (naked light mine), took Hume, carrying an open "midgy" lamp, through the fence into the fore-heading, when a fairly large accumulation of gas exploded, being lit at the open light. Ainsley died soon after, and Hume died the following day. [More information ...]

Baxter, James, 23 Jan 1899, (accident: 11 Nov 1898), aged 33, Hewer, Deceased had fired a shot in the bottom coal, and whilst engaged in filling it up, the intervening stone band, eight inches thick, fell on him. Died January 23rd, 1899 [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Beverley, Charles, 15 Feb 1900, Hewer, run over and killed by a locomotive and seven waggons on the colliery railway; the accident took place during a storm, while deceased was walking from his home to the pay office

Clarke, William, 01 Mar 1898, aged 43, Shifter, He was driving one empty and three full tubs to the shaft, when he lost control over them, and the pony fell into the sump, while he was crushed between the tubs and the side [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Cuthbertson, David, 04 Mar 1904, aged 54, Hewer [More information ...]

Douglas, Samuel, 06 Nov 1906, (accident: 05 Nov 1906), aged 13, Driver, Deceased, who had only worked a fortnight in the pit, brought out five loaded tubs with a quiet pony to the shaft on a roomy road having an inclination of 1 inch per yard in favour of the load. When he arrived at the usual point he attempted to detach the limbers, the bolt of which was of the loose cock type, from the tubs but was unable to do so he then attempted to drive the pony forward a little, but it crossed over and crushed him between the bow of the limbers and the tub. He was at once attended to. If he had had a drag in one of the tub wheels he would have had less difficulty in lifting the limbers free.

Erskine, Robert T. B., 04 Mar 1901, aged 26, Hewer, While ascending with other men he by some means fell out of the cage. There was a proper bar in the cage by which to hold on [Inspection made & inquest attended]
