He was in the act of setting a prop where the shot had been fired when the roof fell in on him, killing him almost instantly. The stone that fell was triangular, and there were two bad slips on two sides, and a break on the third. The shot had probably loosened the stone, and the use of planks doubly ended would have been better under this broken roof. Two props were rolled out.

Houston, John Thomas, 23 Jan 1914, aged 31, Shifter, A shot had been fired in the top canch of a skirting, and deceased was packing the stone which had been brought down. Murphy, Margaret, 02 Nov 1904, aged 57, [Not Employed], deceased trespassed on the colliery wagon way which at the place of accident is a self-acting incline in taking dinner to her husband who was a mason not employed by the colliery company. She appears to have crossed the line about 45 yards above the meetings immediately after the full set passed her and was caught by the upcoming empty set. Notices as to trespassing are posted at several points on the line but these have no effect, the public apparently claiming right of way, the colliery propose prosecuting trespassers in future.

Pringle, Robert, 1927, [approximate date]

Purcell, John Geoffrey, 14 Dec 1911, aged 18, Rope Lad, crushed by runaway tub

Rickard, Charles William, 13 Oct 1903, aged 18, Putter, While deceased and another putter were coming out behind two loaded tubs in pillar workings of the Engine seam, one of the tubs became derailed at a bad joint and knocked out a prop, and the roof fell. A pony was drawing the tubs, but as the road inclined outbye one sprag was in one of the wheels of the first tub and two sprags were in the wheels of the second tub, and deceased and the other putter were holding on behind as the pony was somewhat spirited. The Local Inspectors examined the place, but did not suggest any neglect on the part of the management.

He was crushed between the middle hoop of the cage and the flat sheets. The cages were standing held by the foot lever actuating a post brake on the winding-engine drum, the notched lever of which evidently slipped out from the holding down position, which, releasing the brake, allowed the cage to fall. No defect could be found in the brake lever, so it may not have been placed securely in position.

Williams, John, 04 Jun 1945, aged 68, Shifter, diseased heart failure collowing shock of falling forward on to the left side of his face with some force
