Baker, Robert William, 01 Jun 1909, aged 16, Stone putter, cage accidentally moved while he was getting out in mid-shaft and he fell to the bottom

      

Banks, Thomas Rutherford, 15 Aug 1898, aged 19, Putter, Deceased was found by another putter lying dead in the middle of the way, about 30 yards from the flat. He had been bringing out a full tub and had probably fallen between the limbers and the tub, the latter going over him. The pony was a quiet one, and the road in good order [Inquest attended]

Bell, James, 02 Apr 1897, aged 31, Hewer, Fall of stone at the face. The coal is kirved in the top of the seam, and after a shot had been fired in the coal he began to fill the tub. Before doing so, his marrow says deceased sounded the roof and considered it good. Unfortunately a stone fell on to him [Inspection made & inquest attended], Buried: Churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin, Woodhorn

Bell, Thomas, 01 Aug 1888, aged 57, Hewer, fall of "following" stone, deceased knew stone to be bad, but had placed his boring machine stand under it, and whilst boring, the stone came away and canted machine stand

Blakeburn, William, 07 Feb 1899, (accident: 31 Jan 1899), Hewer, He was seized with a paralytic stroke down the pit on the 31st January, and died on 7th February [fatality reported during the year but not classified as a colliery accident]

      

Boyd, Thomas William, 17 Apr 1912, aged 14, Token boy, deceased was watering the ways on a gangway with a mop, when he slipped and fell through the fence to the ground, a distance of 26 feet; the fence consisted of three 7-inch by 1-inch deals, the middle one was broken, and was found to have a dry knot running diagonally through it; he was fatally injured

Buttle, Robert, 27 Mar 1889, aged 32, Hewer, killed by a fall of coal, Buried: Churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin, Woodhorn

      

Carr, John Robert, 28 Jan 1903, (accident: 23 Jan 1903), aged 33, Hewer, Deceased appears to have been struck by a small fall of stone on the 23rd January, but attached little importance to it and saw no doctor, and it did not interfere with his work. On the 28th January he took ill in the pit and was carried out on a stretcher but was dead when the doctor saw him, who stated at the inquest that death was probably due to cardiac failure, and had no connection with any accident, and the jury found that death was due to natural causes.

      

Charlton, John, 16 Jul 1896, aged 21, Shifter, When building a pillar in the long wall workings he drew some props and the roof fell on to him. The stone fell from between some slips [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Cuthbert, Lancelot, 31 Mar 1903, (accident: 28 Jul 1902), aged 42, Timberer, Deceased was cleaning up and repairing on the engine plane in the Low Main seam when a thin shell of stone fell from the roof upon him and fractured his spine. Other men were working about 25 yards from him, and he was released in a few minutes. The master shifter had examined the place before work was started, and he considered it sate.

Hewitt, John, 08 Jan 1894, 10:30 a.m., 8th hour of shift, aged 43, Pumper, He was going outbye, and stepped on to the full road to allow the pony and empty set to pass him, evidently without looking, and was caught by the pony's limmers and thrown under the full tubs. There was any amount of room, but he should have gone into one of the refuge places, which were every 10 or 15 yards apart [Inspection made]

Horst, Fred, 13 Nov 1914, aged 48, Boilersmith, deceased was crossing the colliery sidings going back to his work from home after the dinner-hour, when he was knocked down and run over by a Railway Company's engine, which was collecting some full wagons to take away; he died a few hours later; there was nothing to account for the manner in which he was killed

Ince, Robert Victor, 07 Nov 1913, aged 17, Landing Lad, twelve lads were ascending in the top deck of a large, well-constructed cage, 9 feet long, 6 feet high and 3 feet 3 inches wide, having a rigid handbar running the full length of the cage in the centre 4 feet off the floor, and guided by end wooden skeats; the cage is protected by sheet-metal gates covering each end of the cage except for a space of 15 inches between bottom of gate and cage flooring; soon after leaving the inset, 85 fathoms deep, deceased, who was standing next to the gate, must have slipped, and, catching his foot against a bunton, he was drawn out of the cage underneath the gate; being probably caught by another bunton, he was knocked back into the bottom deck (empty) of the cage, where he was found with a broken neck and leg; no cry was heard from deceased and none of the boys noticed him fall out [More information ...]

King, William, 30 Oct 1913, aged 46, Stoneman, deceased and his marrow were preparing for a shot in the top canch of a crossheading, and were setting breaking-off timber; coal cutters were used on the face and the roof cuts off regularly each fall; a stone, 15 feet by 2 feet by 5 feet, rolled off the pack from one of these breaks, knocked out the timber in the crossheading, and killed him instantly; a shot had been fired in an adjoining place, 20 minutes before, and this may have shaken the stone

Mitcheson, John, 23 Apr 1906, (accident: 12 Apr 1906), aged 46, Chargeman, Deceased was going his rounds in the longwall workings of the Staple district in the Yard seam, and when about 33 yards from the face on the Mothergate, was adjusting a canvas sheet in an auxiliary air road, when some blue metal stone, 5 feet 6 inches long, 3 feet 6 inches wide, and 2 feet 11 inches thick, fell off the side above the pack, relieved by jacks, and fastened him. Some men at the face heard the fall, and he was at once released, but he was unconscious and paralysed, his spine being broken. The Local Inspectors made no report., Buried: St. Peter's Cemetery, West Sleekburn
