Barras, Hugh Munro, 22 Apr 1958, aged 35, Stoneman, killed by a fall of stone

      

Boll, Thomas, 02 Jul 1894, 9:00 a.m., 3rd hour of shift, aged 62, Hewer, Deceased, after firing a shot in the coal, was reaching over a tub, when some stone which had been shaken by the shot fell and broke his leg. Died from blood poisoning [Inspection made & inquest attended]

      

Brown, Thomas, 17 Nov 1905, (accident: 09 Nov 1905), aged 57, Farmer, Deceased was at Netherton Colliery with a horse and cart for coal; while in the weigh house paying for the coal the horse moved away and deceased ran after it and was crushed by the cart against a gate post, his head was injured and three ribs broken, and he died four days later from heart disease and shock, as stated at the inquest by the doctor who attended him

Miller, George, 26 May 1902, aged 47, Stoneman, deceased and two other stonemen who were injured were timbering a waggonway in the Five Quarter seam ; a shot had been fired at the place three hours before the accident, and the place had been examined by the deputy afterwards ; deceased was cutting a prop to set under one end of a balk when a fall occurred

Sherwin, James, 29 Oct 1906, aged 40, Stoneman, Deceased, who was under medical treatment for heart disease, worked in the night shift and had complained to his marrow during the course of the shift of feeling unwell. They went outbye together at the end of the shift, but deceased lagged behind and was left to come out alone as his marrow had some work to attend to near the shaft. When the fore shift hewers were going inbye about 3.30 a.m. they found deceased quite dead by the side of the road with his lamp burning near him. An inquest was held, at which there was no suggestion of any accident made and medical evidence given that death was due to heart disease, and so the jury found.

      

Shotton, William, 14 Dec 1906, aged 59, Screener, Deceased, who was sometimes rather deaf, left the screens about 6.30 a.m. to relieve himself, and while crossing the sidings was caught by a 15-ton loaded truck which was being pushed by a locomotive no one saw or was aware of any accident until his dead body was found.

Stokoe, William, 08 Aug 1903, aged 22, Onsetter, Deceased in loading the cage pushed two full tubs too far, and stepped partly on the cage to pull them back, when it moved away, and he was caught against the point skeet. The engineman stated at the inquest he received one rap before he started the cage. Several men at the bottom waiting to ascend, and the banksman on the surface, said no rap was given. The jury found that deceased was killed "by the cage being accidentally or by mistake brought away from the bottom." The Local Inspectors reported: "We have no complaint to make; everything is in order."
