Names of those killed at this colliery

Please note that this collection of names is by no means complete!

Birkett, Isaac, 01 Apr 1913, (accident: 31 Mar 1913), aged 43, Miner, deceased was charging a hole with gelatine dynamite, and in contravention of the Special Rules, was using an iron tool, instead of one of the wooden rammers provided by the Company; he had pushed home about a dozen cartridges when an explosion occurred; he died the following day; two other men who were in the working were injured

Cowan, John, 26 Nov 1878, aged 41, Miner, fell from kibble in sinking pit

Haffie, Thomas, 19 Oct 1900, aged 30, Miner, He tried to light a roof hole with a candle on the end of a pole. Being apparently unsuccessful, he went for a ladder and the shot exploded just as he got back to the working face. [Inspection made & inquest attended] [More information ...]

Hewitson, Archibald, 13 Oct 1914, (accident: 08 Oct 1914), aged 43, Miner, deceased was preparing charges for blasting, and whilst shaking the sawdust from a detonator by tapping it on the edge of a wooden box, the detonator exploded; there may have been a smear of fulminate on the edge of the detonator, or he may have been inadvertently tapping the bottom instead of the open end; his thumb and forefinger were shattered and were amputated on the same day; the uninjured man was progressing satisfactorily, but 5 days after the accident he suddenly collapsed; according to the medical evidence death was due to syncope, and the accident was not a contributory cause; the jury, however, returned a verdict that death was due to heart failure, accelerated by the accident

Jenkinson, Henry, 03 Aug 1899, aged 38, Miner, Deceased's working was a vertical rise. A strong staging or platform had been put in five feet from the top where it was intended to turn off a working. A shot fired in the roof on the previous shift had covered the platform and choked the manhole with ore. Jenkinson cleared the manhole and got through on to the platform, but before he had time to examine the place, he was caught by a fall from the roof [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Kendall, John Nelson, 06 Feb 1908, aged 28, Miner, a huge mass of roof suddenly fell; no timber was used in the place as the roof was considered thoroughly sound and strong

Lynch, Jeremiah, 30 May 1879, aged 21, Miner, fell from part way down shaft to bottom

Muncaster, Henry, 08 May 1877, aged 37, Miner, explosion of dynamite

Ray, Archibald, 25 Sep 1883, aged 44, Miner, accidental explosion of a shot
