Description

From a very early period, coal has been worked in Winlaton township, and to some extent is still carried on by Joseph Cowen, Esq., and the Stella Coal Co. The former have a colliery at Blaydon Burn, and at Lilly Drift, Rowlands Gill. at the Lilley Drift there are about 100 men working the Brockwell seam, which is here 3 feet 6 inches thick.

Names of those killed at this colliery

Please note that this collection of names is by no means complete!

Forster, John George, 13 Nov 1913, aged 26, Hewer, whilst deceased was engaged in getting coal in a longwall working place, a block of post stone, 5 feet long, 1½ feet wide, and 2½ feet thick, fell from converging joints, killing him instantly; the seam was 1 foot 10 inches section, and a prop which was set under the middle of the stone was displaced

Gardiner, James, 05 Feb 1902, aged 53, Stoneman, occurred in the Five Quarter seam which has a soft fireclay roof ; he was re-timbering an old road at a point where another road crossed it at right angles, and running balks required to be used ; he had put in several new crowns, temporarily supported by middle props until the running balks were put up, when a heavy fall of roof, amounting to 20 tons of stuff, canted all the timber and buried him

Hetherington, Isaac, 29 Dec 1896, aged 70, Furnaceman, The water came away in the upcast shaft and reversed the ventilation, causing the smoke from the furnace to be driven on to him, from the effects of which, according to the medical evidence, he died [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Hunter, William, 07 Aug 1928, aged 51, Deputy, killed by fall of stone [More information ...]

Knotts, Isaac, 01 Jul 1891, 2:30 p.m., 5th hour of shift, aged 55, Deputy, fall of stone; he was drawing some pops when a long stone fell from between some props where he was standing, presumably in safety [Enquiry made]

Murphy, John, 05 Nov 1903, aged 47, Hewer, Deceased and another hewer were turning away lifts opposite to each other in the Five Quarter seam, which here is separated from the Stone Coal seam by only 18 inches of stone of a short nature, and at the particular place the Stone Coal seam had been worked in olden times, and the old place had been stowed with rubbish. The place was well timbered with two running balks and planks across, but a fall took place which knocked one of the props out below one of the running balks, and the whole roof then collapsed, swinging a quantity of timber. The Local Inspectors reported: "We consider it a pure accident."

Pearson, Robert (jnr), 28 Jul 1896, aged 23, Stoneman, Explosion of gunpowder [Inspection made & inquest attended] [More information ...]

Reay, Robert, 18 May 1899, aged 25, Hewer, When engaged in hewing, he was warned by his marrow that the roof was uneasy. On attempting to come out he was buried under a large fall, which came away from some slips and canted out several sets of timber [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Smith, Robert, 09 Feb 1910, aged 29, Hewer, fall of band stone

Tilley, Edward, 15 Jun 1897, aged 74, Waggonman, He was helping with the arranging of the wagons near the screens, and drove his horse too near the empty wagons which were standing, and, in attempting to cross from one side to the other, he was caught and knocked down by the buffers [Inspection made & inquest attended]
