| | | | |  | | Cairns, James, 24 Apr 1857, Brakesman, some workmen were replacing a broken engine spear, after completing the job, they slackened the crab rope which had supported the full weight of the spear. This had the effect of throwing the weight onto the engine beam, which was unsupported. The beam then descended, and a half ton iron rod connecting the pumping apparatus was thrown on the brakesman, James Cairns, killing him instantly |
