| | | | | | | Nicholson, John, 17 Aug 1896, aged 29, Miner, The working in which the accident occurred had holed into another place, and the men were engaged in putting in the last or finishing course of timber to make a through connexion, when a part of the stone roof, some 5 or 6 tons, fell without any warning, killing Nicholson on the spot, and slightly injuring one of the others. The unexpected movement caused deceased to slip, and his leg was caught by the cage. Hooks are provided for the onsetters to pull off the empty bogies, but they do not appear to have been generally used. After the wagons are loaded they are drawn forward by a locomotive opposite a bench on which the stones are thrown, and this was the boy's proper place, but he appears to have got on to a wagon at the shoot, and had a heap of stones collected ready to throw on to the bench when the wagon reached it. While the locomotive was removing the wagon and others his waistcoat caught on the door of the shoot and he fell to the ground and the next wagon passed over his legs. |
