Banks, Robert, 14 Oct 1846, Robert Banks was about to descend the shaft of Arbour new pit, near Great Lumley, when he was jerked out of the cage and fell between it and the brattice work. Two or three men went immediately to his assistance — extricated him from his perilous situation — and brought him to bank. He was crushed in a dreadful manner. Banks lived for only a few minutes longer

     

Lewison, Simpson, 20 Dec 1847, Fireman, On 20 December, Simpson Lewison, a fireman at Arbour House Pit, Great Lumley, went down the shaft to change the plunger of the pump at the same time that the cage was being drawn to bank. He was caught by the cage, drawn to bank and killed.

     

Speed, John, 04 May 1849, aged 15, Putter, he was crushed to death between a tub and the props
