Davison, Reuben, 10 Dec 1913, (accident: 08 Dec 1913), aged 14, Landing Lad, a putter was taking off about 1 foot of side coal in a cross-cut to straighten it; whilst deceased was walking past the putter a piece of stone, weighing 10 cwts., fell from the side of the canch and knocked two props out, one of which struck deceased and fractured his skull; he died in the hospital on 10th December; the putter was 18 years of age, and had not examined the stone ; the officials should have sent a more experienced man to do the work [Sunderland Echo reports: accident - 12 Dec 1913 pg 2 col 3] [More information ...]

      

Dixon, John, 24 Mar 1902, (accident: 10 Mar 1902), aged 57, Onsetter, while attending to the unloading and loading of the cage at the shaft bottom his hand was caught and injured, and blood poisoning ensued

Glanville, J. R., 29 Jun 1946, aged 61, Masons Labourer, crushed by tubs

      

Glanville, Thomas, 28 Apr 1903, aged 14, Trapper, Deceased during his third shift in the pit was being taught by a driver how to drive. He was put on the limbers of a pony attached to a tub laden with timber by the wagonwayman, who had been instructed by the under manager to teach the lad to drive, and told how to sit, and to keep his head down as the road was somewhat low. He had only been on the limbers while the pony, led by the driver, had travelled about 40 yards when he seems to have caught a prop and fallen on a sharp stone by the side of way, and fractured his skull. The Local Inspectors in their report simply recited the principal facts connected with the accident. [Sunderland Echo reports: accident - 01 May 1903 pg 3]

Iley, Joseph, 28 May 1912, aged 30, Hewer, when squaring up the left side of a place of 3 yards wide, the coal 5 ft. thick came away at a slip; he stepped back but was struck by a prop which was knocked out by the falling coal [Sunderland Echo reports: accident - 05 Jun 1912 pg 3 col 2]

Kail, John, 25 Nov 1902, aged 42, Hewer, deceased was hewing in a place in the Maudlin seam in the "broken" going parallel to a small trouble ; the tub road crossed this trouble, and the pony putter, in going outbye, got off way, and deceased came out to help to get the tub on the road, leaving his lamp at the face ; a fall of roof, possibly caused by the derailed tub loosening a prop, occurred, and deceased was pinned behind the tub [Sunderland Echo reports: accident - 28 Nov 1902 pg 3]

Southern, Matthew Waister, 01 Aug 1911, aged 31, Putter and Hewer, killed by a fall of stone [Sunderland Echo reports: accident - 01 Aug 1911 pg 5 col 3; inquest - 03 Aug 1911 pg 3 col 3]

     

Stephenson, William, 09 Oct 1903, aged 55, Screenman, About 10.30 p.m. two 10-ton North Eastern Railway Co.'s trucks which had been resting, loaded with coal, for some days, and had become difficult to move, were standing in front of seven 4-ton wagons; several men, including deceased, were summoned from the screens to push forward the 10-ton trucks, and deceased, although warned to keep outside the rails, was between them, and when the trucks had been moved a few feet the smaller wagons crept away, although the gradient was only 1 in 159, and he was crushed between the wagons and trucks. Tatters, Wilkinson, 08 Jul 1904, (accident: 29 Jun 1904), aged 44, Gatewayman, A stone putter behind a loaded stone tub with two 6-feet props on it was taking it inbye down a dipping road and had put a wooden drag into one of its wheels. He thought the props on it were catching the baulks across the roof, and he stopped to adjust them, and in doing so probably pulled the tub back, and so caused the drag to fall out. On resuming his journey he found he could not control the tub although it never actually got away from him. He shouted to warn deceased and other men in front of him, but deceased either got flurried and failed to stand clear, or he tried to stop the tub and was severely crushed by it [Sunderland Echo reports: accident - 12 Jul 1904 pg 3]
