Description

Herrington Colliery, the property of the Earl of Durham, was opened in 1874, working the Hutton seam, 3 feet in thickness, at a depth of 170 fathoms ; the Maudlin seam 4½ feet thick, at 145 fathoms ; having an output of 1000 tons per day, and giving employment to 800 men and boys.

New Herrington is a populous colliery village in this township [West Herrington], about one and a half miles north of Houghton-le-Spring. Here are chapels belonging to the Bible Christians and Christian Lay Church ; also lecture hall, which will seat about 450 persons. There are billiard, recreation, and reading rooms in connection with the Co-operative stores.

St. Cuthbert's National School, erected by Lord Durham, for boys, girls, and infants, have accomodation for 710 scholars, with an average attendance of 600.

Bingham, Luke, 10 Feb 1921, aged 50, Night Shift Examiner, Henry Boll and R. Welsh were taking down a steel girder, which was supported by props. As Bingham came on the scene from the opposite side, Boll drew the prop, and a huge mass of falling stone came away killing Bingham and injuring Welsh.

Kirtley, Joseph, 03 Sep 1909, aged 50, Hewer, These men were run over by a timber tram and killed as they were on their way inbye. Two youths had been told to take a tram of timber into the Hutton Seam. To do this, owing to the heavy gradient, the custom had always been to put a tub in front of the timber tram, and to yoke a pony to the tub. On this occasion the youths dispensed with the pony and the tub, and, although there were two sprags in the tram wheels, it ran amain down the incline.
