Braithwaite, Hartley, 17 Nov 1898, aged 23, Miner's Labourer, A portion of the roof, near the working face, suddenly fell and struck Braithwaite on the head. The place had been examined by the overman about four hours prior to the accident, but no indication of danger was then observed [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Cullinder, John, 12 May 1890, 11:30 a.m., 3rd hour of shift, aged 58, Miner, fall of stone; the piece of stone that fell was examined by the overman at 7 am. on the day of the accident, and finding it very bad he ordered Cullender to take it down; Cullender did not do so, and allowed Irving to work under it; about 11.30 a.m. it fell and killed both the men; the overman did not go to see his orders were obeyed, although the place was only a short distance from the shaft [More information ...]

Gainford, Tyson, 19 Dec 1899, aged 23, Labourer, He went to get a drink from a runner of water in the direction of a neighbouring working. He was warned that a shot had just gone off, by the men who fired it, but as he could reach the water without going to the working face, none of them apparently thought there was actual danger. He was, however, struck by a piece of ore which had been loosened by the shot [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Gunn, Thomas, 12 Jun 1900, aged 56, Miner, Deceased was erecting a stage for the purpose of boring a hole to bring down some bad ground, when the latter fell and caught him. He had previously tried to bring it down with a bar. [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Irving, William, 12 May 1890, 11:30 a.m., 3rd hour of shift, aged 20, Trailer, fall of stone; the piece of stone that fell was examined by the overman at 7 am. on the day of the accident, and finding it very bad he ordered Cullender to take it down; Cullender did not do so, and allowed Irving to work under it; about 11.30 a.m. it fell and killed both the men; the overman did not go to see his orders were obeyed, although the place was only a short distance from the shaft [More information ...]

Looney, Henry, 09 Mar 1895, 9:30 a.m., 4th hour of shift, aged 45, Miner, fall of stone roof; deceased's "company" was engaged in lifting the sole of an old working, having holed into it at a lower level; three hours previous to the accident the overman and deceased examined the roof, and considered it perfectly sound; subsequently a shot was fired, which supposedly blew out a prop; this prop was not supposed to have any "weight," but the roof fell, with scarcely any warning, as the men were returning after blasting
