Armour, James, 13 Nov 1902, aged 31, Hewer, deceased was found lying on his back unconscious in his working place, and died in a few minutes ; he had been seen a quarter of an hour before and was then all right ; no evidence of any accident ; inquest held and post mortem examination made, from which it appeared death was due to syncope from diseased heart and not from any accident or violence, and so the jury found

      

Bell, Andrew, 26 Jun 1894, 6:45 a.m., 1st hour of shift, aged 13, Driver, When some tubs were moving, deceased attempted to couple them, and his head was crushed. He should have waited till they were at rest [Inquest attended]

Bentley, Richard, 10 Jun 1909, aged 39, Hewer, fall of roof stone at face of longwall

      

Briggs, William N., 1919, [approximate date]

      

Brown, Richard, 19 Feb 1914, (accident: 18 Feb 1914), aged 31, Hewer, Deceased was getting coal in a longwall working place, where the loose end had been neglected and allowed to hang back about 4 yards in the goaf. The roof weight had crushed the coal, and about 15 cwt. came away, knocking him against a prop and rupturing his spleen. He died on the following day

Capstaff, George, 07 Dec 1901, aged 13, Driver, Deceased jumped from a workmenĘs carriage when in motion, and in running forward caught his foot against a sleeper, and fell in front of the first wheel of the second carriage [Inquest attended]

      

Carr, John, 29 Jul 1879, aged 56, Rolleywayman, crushed by tubs on engine plane

Clark, William, 07 Jan 1896, aged 40, Hewer, While the deceased was "kirving" a large stone fell from "slips" on to him. The deceased's marrow and the deputy overman, who had previously examined the place, considered it in good order [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Duffel, William, 18 Aug 1892, (accident: 02 Aug 1892, 1:00 p.m., 3rd hour of shift), aged 19, Hewer, Cut his knee slightly with a piece of splint coal. He worked a few days with a greasy bandage on, when blood-poisoning set in, and he died on the 18th August [Inquest attended]

Hewison, George, 04 Aug 1845, aged 57, killed by a fall of stone, Buried: St. Albans Churchyard, Earsdon

      

Hewison, Thomas, 27 Jul 1903, aged 50, Hewer, While breaking into a pillar of coal in the Yard seam off the wagonway a large stone fell from the canch and caught his head, breaking his neck. He was kirving in the top coal at the time. There were three props under the stone, and two stays set against its side, but all were displaced. The deputy had examined the place one hour before. The Local Inspectors reported: "In our judgment we found it a pure accident."

Hindmarsh, Robert, 30 Apr 1912, aged 68, Brusher, deceased was removing a bottom shot and building a left side pack, when a stone fell 7 yds. long, 2 yds. wide and 1 ft. 10 ins, thick, canting out three or more sets of gears and fatally injuring him

Knox, Ralph, 22 May 1899, aged 64, Deputy, Deceased and another deputy were removing some loose debris from the side in order to make a flat, when a stone fell from a slip of which both men were cognisant, but they did not consider it necessary to set any timber [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Lewis, Lawrence, 09 May 1930, Shot Firer, accidentally instantly killed through being crushed by a fall of stone (fractured skull), whilst working in the conveyor heading gate of the Beaumont Seam, inquest held May 12 1930

McPherson, John Daniel, 22 Jul 1913, aged 47, Screener, deceased was crossing a gangway on which a section of the fence was movable to allow dirt and manure tubs to be tipped; this fence rail does not appear to have been replaced securely; there was a high wind and he was seen to be blown against the fence and grasp the insecure rail; he fell with it to the ground, a distance of 14 feet 9 inches, and was instantly killed

Smith, Robert, 30 Jul 1892, 11:00 a.m., 5th hour of shift, aged 15, Incline Lad, He was employed at foot of incline, and, thinking that a full tub had run amain, he crossed over to the empty road and was crushed against a set of tubs standing there by the descending empty tub. The boys are now dispensed with at this point [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Venner, Edward, 03 Mar 1893, 2:00 p.m., 7th hour of shift, aged 14, Driver, A stone fell out from between two baulks, which were 7 ft. apart at the flat. According to the evidence of the deputy, who was at the flat at the time, and of others, no danger had been apprehended. It is possible that the weight had ridden over from a long-wall face not far off, and so disturbed the roof [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Watson, Martin, 13 Apr 1892, (accident: Oct 1891, 7:00 p.m., 1st hour of shift), aged 71, Shifter, In October 1891 the deceased was cleaning out a sump, when he slipped off a plank and fell a distance of two feet, injuring his back [Inspection made]
