Description

Elemore Colliery, situated in the township of Pittington, is the property of the Hetton Coal Company, Limited. Sinking was begun in March 1825, and the following seams were reached: Main Coal, at a depth of 94 fathoms, 5 feet 8 inches in thickness, and the Low Main, 113 fathoms, 3 feet to 4 feet thick. The Hutton seam was reached on February 5, 1827, at a depth of 126 fathoms, and is now worked out. The number of men employed under ground is 616, above ground 172; average output, 800 tons per day. The mine is ventilated by furnaces alone, circulating 156,600 cubic feet of air per minute. The "Arc" incandescent electric light is extensively used, both above and below the surface. There are two pits, known as the "George" and "Isabella."
