Atkinson, John, 14 Jan 1870, aged 15, Driver, run over by tubs

      

Aytack, Arthur, 08 Sep 1899, aged 22, Shifter, The deceased and his marrow were ridding stones from a shot and building a pack at the face of a gateway. While Aytack was examining the roof, a stone fell from slips and a wet parting and struck him on the back of the head and neck [Inspection made & inquest attended]

      

Bambridge, Herbert W., 1941, [approximate date]

      

Bangay, James, 25 Feb 1913, aged 71, Washer-engine Attendant, deceased was found mangled by the bevel wheels of a revolving nut screen, 20 feet above ground level; his oil can was lying near and his clothes had probably caught in the wheels whilst he was oiling the bearings; the washer attendant usually did this work as deceased had a wooden left leg and his left hand had been maimed; notices were posted prohibiting oiling whilst the machinery was in motion

Beattie, William, 14 Sep 1894, 1:00 p.m., 3rd hour of shift, aged 32, Hewer, He was caught by some unspragged coal falling when he was kirving. His brother was at the same time drilling a shot hole in the coal, which had only just been examined by the deputy [Inquest attended]

      

Beckett, Alfred, 31 Aug 1908, aged 30, Shifter, fall of stone from brow of canch at working face

      

Bell, James, 18 Apr 1903, aged 29, Fitter & Shaftman, Deceased, the son of the enginewright of the colliery, who was present when the accident occurred, was assisting in raising an old Lancashire boiler into position to act as a tank. Two chocks 29 feet apart were supporting the boiler, which was raised at each end in turn by hydraulic jacks, and the height made good by adding wood to the chocks. Deceased was at the south end of the boiler, the north end then being highest, when it surged forward and crushed him against a chimney stack.

      

Bradley, David, 18 Jul 1900, aged 56, Hewer, Deceased and his son were working in a place which had just holed into the goaf. While he was examining the roof between the goaf and timber a large fall took place. There was a plentiful supply of suitable timber. [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Dixon, Robert, 27 Sep 1867, aged 18, Labourer, by waggons

      

Donald, John, 09 Jul 1903, aged 25, Hewer, Deceased and another hewer, after filling loose coals at the face of a lift in the broken workings in the Low Main seam in the undersea workings, were in the act of setting a prop when a thickness of 3 feet of the roof suddenly fell. The place had been properly inspected. The Local Inspectors reported that they "decided the accident to be one purely accidental, and quite unforeseen." Left a wife and infant daughter

Laws, William, 09 Feb 1892, 2:00 p.m., 7th hour of shift, aged 18, Putter, Whilst riding on the limmers, and in crossing from one side to the other, as he approached a turn in the road his head caught against the roof and he was forced back on to the tub, injuring his spine [Inquiries made & inquest attended]

      

Lee, William, 1897, aged 74, Mason's Labourer, was alleged to have died from injuries received 6 weeks previously while wheeling a barrow; after hearing the evidence a verdict of "Death from natural causes" was returned [fatality reported during the year but not classified as a colliery accident]

Lilley, Thomas, 24 Dec 1889, aged 20, Fitter, scalded by tube bursting in an underground boiler

      

Lydd, William, 09 Jan 1893, (accident: Jan 1891), Shifter, died from paralysis, brought on, so it was stated, by an injury to his wrist, received in January 1891; it was difficult to trace any connection between the so-called accident and his death, but in any case, as more than 12 months and a day had elapsed between the two events, it was not necessary to report it

      

Manfred, Patrick, 19 Dec 1900, aged 29, Hewer, The deceased had almost completed kirving a jud, when the coal suddenly came over a sprag which had been set. [Inspection made & inquest attended]

      

Marshall, Frederick, 15 Mar 1893, aged 19, Putter, Contrary to rules, he was riding his pony, and galloping towards the stables when he met the "set" of tubs, and he was severely crushed. The road is in good order, and with plenty of width [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Robinson, William, 30 Aug 1901, aged 32, Hewer, While hewing in a broken working a stone fell away from two slips, knocking out a prop which had been set to support the stone [Inquest attended]

      

Robson, John, 23 Dec 1897, aged 35, Shifter, Deceased and his marrow were ridding a shot. They had been told to be careful about some stone which was hanging at a "jack" by the assistant master shifter two hours before. He told them to take it down, but they neglected to do so, and it afterwards fell on to the deceased [Inquest attended]

      

Roland, Robert, 26 Nov 1894, (accident: 27 Oct 1894), Miner, disappeared at night after leaving a public house, and nothing more was heard of him until 26th November, when his body was found in the colliery reservoir

      

Roxburgh, John, 16 Dec 1890, aged 68, Furnaceman, caught by an ascending cage and pulled into the shaft

Smith, Thomas, 22 May 1877, aged 13, Driver, fell off limmers, and tubs ran over him

      

Stevens, Jonathan, 07 Jun 1905, (accident: 02 Jun 1905), aged 36, Hewer, Deceased was kyrving in the top of the Yard seam, nearly opposite the gateway in a longwall place, when an oval-shaped post stone, with diameters 5½ feet and 4 feet, and about 1 foot thick in the centre thinning out all round the upper surface, being rather glassy and mixed with coal pipes, fell close to the face upon him, displacing two props set under it, and giving no warning. Deceased's marrow narrowly escaped. The deputy had been in the place about an hour before when it appeared safe. There was an ample supply of timber. The Local Inspectors made no report

      

Storey, Henry, 08 Jul 1898, aged 36, Hewer, When hewing in a "broken jud," he requested his brother to hand him some timber to set, but before the latter could do so, a large stone fell away without any warning from between two "slips." The working was reported to be well-timbered up to within half a yard from the face by the deputy who had examined the place a short time previously [Inquest attended]

Turnbull, Thomas George, 14 Jul 1904, aged 52, Wasteman, A shot charged with three cartridges of gelignite was prepared in stone by the side of a return air road and was fitted with fuse and detonator. Deceased lit the fuse and retired along the road a distance of 75 feet and stood on the same side as that on which the shot was placed. He had sufficient time to take up a safer position. When the shot exploded a stone was projected and struck him on the head and he died in a few hours. The Local Inspectors reported "that it was purely accidental and no blame can be attached to anyone"
