Names of those killed at this colliery

Please note that this collection of names is by no means complete!

Bell, Francis, 30 Nov 1900, aged 22, Hewer, While engaged hewing some stone fell away at a slip close to the face, canting out several props. [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Black, George, 27 Mar 1899, Hewer, Died suddenly about two hours after returning from his work, and it was alleged that it was due to carbonic acid poisoning. The medical evidence did not, however, bear out this theory, and the jury accordingly returned a verdict "That death was due to natural causes." [fatality reported during the year but not classified as a colliery accident]

Cameron, Joseph, 21 Sep 1896, aged 68, Hewer, He was working in a 4-yards bord, the roof of which was bad and full of "slips." A small trouble ran diagonally across the place from the right, and there was a slip running along the right hand side of the place. In working out the coal, he bared another slip at the face, and the stone came away from these slips, tapering off to a feather edge. One prop was canted out. An official was in about half hour before and considered the place safe, but it is doubtful, considering the nature of the roof, whether he should not have had another plank set. The nearest to the face was 6 feet away [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Cockton, John, 21 Sep 1872, aged 41, Blacksmith, crushed by cage

Fletcher, John, 15 Oct 1867, aged 44, Hewer, killed by a fall of stone

Hartley, Thomas, 15 Dec 1905, aged 48, Hewer, electric shock [More information ...]

Irving, Joseph, 28 Apr 1899, aged 59, Hewer, He had just commenced to kirve at the longwall face when a stone (cauldron bottom), 4½ ft. diameter, fell without any warning. The place had been inspected before and during the shift, and was apparently well timbered [Inspection made & inquest attended]

Lister, James, 26 Jan 1887, aged 48, Back Overman, crushed between stationary and moving tub

Lynch, John, 22 Feb 1904, aged 16 [More information ...]

Martin, Joseph, 06 Nov 1911, aged 32, Hewer, killed by a fall of stone

Musgrave, Robert, 29 Apr 1908, aged 19, Hewer, fall of stone in longwall gateway near face of brushing

Rook, Barnet, 29 Oct 1895, 11:45 p.m., 3rd hour of shift, aged 55, Shifter, the deceased and a labourer were sent into the workings to remove a large stone, which was temporarily supported by props; unfortunately, in removing these, which he knew would result in a fall of some stone, he went under the stone instead of standing at the edge of it

Smith, John, 18 Jun 1868, aged 72, Screener, run over by waggons

Spark, John Henry, 24 Feb 1910, aged 18, Appentice Hewer, killed by a fall of stone

Tunstall, William, 29 Jun 1872, aged 63, Hewer, killed by a fall of coal

Wilkinson, Thomas, 25 Mar 1908, aged 61, Hewer, fall of stone at face of longwall
